FLIGHT International, I March 1980 679 OTHER NATIONS continued -4 -4 page 674 CANADA de Havilland Canada DHC-5 Buffalo Buffalo production is now one aircraft a month. The Buffalo is powered by two General Electric T64-820-4 turboprops, flat-rated at 3,133 s.h.p. to 100°F. Gross weight is increased to 49,2001b and pay- load is up to 18,0001b. Orders total 103, including undisclosed operators. Customers: Abu Dhabi 5; Brazil 24; Canada 15; Ecuador 2; Kenya 8; Mauritania 2; Oman 2; Peru 16; Sudan 4; Tanzania 6; Togo 2; Zaire 3; Zambia 7. de HaviUand Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter Production continues at six aircraft a month. The Twin Otter was designed as a general utility transport and has adapted to a wide variety of missions, both civil and military. It can be easily converted to operate "on wheel-skis or floats, and the present 300 Series can accommodate up to 20 passengers or 4,2801b of cargo. Customers: Argentina 11; Canada 8; Ecuador 3; Jamaica 1; Norway 4; Panama 1; Paraguay 1; Peru 17; US Army 4 and US Air Force 2. de Havilland Canada DHC-7R Ranger First customer for this maritime patrol variant of the Dash 7 Stol airliner is the Canadian Government, which has ordered two for ice reconnaissance. Most likely application for the Ranger is coastguard duties but can include search-and-rescue and transport duties. Customer: Canada 2. CHINA B-5 Production of this Chinese-copy 11-28 Beagle continues. Originally some 200 Il-28s were supplied to China in the mid-to-late 1950s B-6 Deliveries of this Chinese-built Tupolev Tu-16 Badger started in 1968 and, according to the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, it is still in production. F-6 Mainstay of the Chinese Air Force is the F-6, a MiG-19 copy. Versions built include an equivalent to the Soviet radar-equipped MiG-19PF. China has also built a tandem two-seat trainer variant. Customers: Albania 36; Bangladesh 36; China; Egypt 40, noather 40 may be bought; Kampuchea 16 (fate unknown); Pakistan 140; Tanzania 10; Vietnam small number; Zambia small number. F-6bis Fantan This indigenous develop ment of the MiG-19/F-6 has a new front fuselage with side intakes. The rear fuselage has been lengthened to restore balance. All-up weight is estimated by Flight to be 25,2001b (11,430kg) some 8,5001b (3,850kg) up on the F-6. Two developed RD-9 turbojets produce an estimated 16,5001b (7-3kN) total thrust. Although it appears to have been de signed to take a radar the F-6bis has a metal nose and is used for ground attack. Internal fuel capacity is in creased. Customer: China. CZECHOSLOVAKIA Aero L-39 Albatross Selected as suc cessor to the L-29 Delfin, more than 3,000 of which were built up to 1974, the L-39 entered service with the Czecho- L Valmet Miltrainer (Vinka) Slovak Air Force in 1974 and is now in full series production for the air forces of nearly all the Warsaw Pact countries, including the Soviet Union. The aircraft is part of a training package which also includes a simulator. Latest version is the L-39Z intended for basic, advanced and weapons train ing with a ground-attack capability. Armament comprises an under-fuselage cannon—probably the twin-barrelled GSh-23—and four under-wing hard- points. Customers: Afghanistan; Czechoslovakia; East Germany; Iraq; Libya; other customers in Warsaw Pact. EGYPT Bii 181 Gomhouria Production of this 1939-vintage German elementary trainer de Havilland Canada DHC-5D Buffalo is reported to be continuing. Latest Egyptian-built variant is the Mk 8R with upgraded communication and navigation equipment and an improved engine starting system. Customer: Egypt approx 200. FINLAND Valmet Miltrainer (Vinka) Deliveries of this primary trainer to the Finnish Air Force began in February. Thirty are on order to replace a similar number of Saab Safirs. The aircraft is essentially a two-seat trainer but two further pas senger seats are optional and an agri cultural version is on offer. An engine of up to 300 h.p. could be fitted, and skis are available for winter operations. Customers: Finland 30; Valmet company 2.
