Indian Airlines was formed as a state corporation on August 1, 1953, taking over the domestic and regional services previously operated by eight private air lines. It is an autonomous corporation under the administrative control of the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation. Operations are organised into four regions controlled from Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta and Madras and include ser vices to Afghanistan, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldive Islands. Besides scheduled and charter passenger and cargo services, Indian Airlines operates a night airmail system linking the four cities mentioned above, and provides a Boeing 737 plus technical and managerial assistance to Maldive International Airlines, set up jointly in 1977 by Indian Airlines and the Govern ment of the Maldive Islands. Interflug started operations in September 1955, but scheduled passen ger services began in February 1956 between Berlin and Warsaw followed by domestic routes in June 1957. Scheduled passenger and cargo services now link 45 cities in 33 countries and charter work is also undertaken, while a separate division handles agricultural and other aerial work. Scheduled freight ser vices and passenger and cargo charters are operated between Panama Citv and Miami. Scheduled routes link Panama with Chetumal, Cozumel, Caracas, Maracaibo, Porlamar, Cali, Bogota, Barranquilla, Medellin, Lima, Manaus, Santiago de Chile, Iquique and Arica. Intra Airways, formed in 1969 to operate passenger and cargo charters from Jersey, ceased operations on November 1. 1979. The assets of the company were acquired by Express Air Services, a Field Aviation/Hunting Group company, and both merged into Jersey European Airways. Invicta International Airlines was formed in December 1970 to succeed Invicta Air Cargo Ltd in order to permit the carriage of passengers as well as cargo. In February 1973, the European Ferries shipping group acquired a con trolling interest in the airline from the original founders, H. Kennard and C. J. Stevens, and in January 1976 the total share capital was re-purchased by Uni versal Air Transport Sales Ltd, of which Hugh Kennard is chairman. IPEC Aviation, operated for a period as IPEC Airbridge, a subsidiary of IPEC (Australia) Pty Ltd, was formed in 1976 to operate the Bass Strait freight ser vice linking Essendon Airport, Mel bourne, with Launceston in Tasmania four times daily. IPEC (Interstate Parcel Express Company) is one of Australia's largest transport companies, specialis ing in fast freight and overnight ser vices. In 1977 IPEC took over the Tas-manian charter airline Fleet Air Ser vices, but disposed of the company and its sole DC-3 in January 1980.
