Scheduled passenger services were Vogun in 1961 and have since developed into an extensive network linking lAristchurch with Mount Cook, Queens-town, Milford Sound, Te Anau, Rotorua a«id Auckland; Dunedin with Alexandra and Queenstown; and Auckland with Bay of Islands (Kerikeri). Sightseeing, tourist and charter flights are also operated. During 1974 NZNAC (now Air New Zealand) acquired a 15 per cent 'iolding in Mount Cook Airlines. Namib Air was formed in 1946 as South •"Vest Air Transport. In March 1959 the company merged with Oryx Aviation •and became Suidwes Lugdiens (Edms) Beperk. In 1965 Namib Air (since 'November 1974 a wholly owned sub sidiary of Saf marine) became the sole •owner of Suidwes, and the present title was adopted in 1978. Scheduled opera tions began in 1948 and now link Wind hoek with Grootfontein and Tsumeb to Lhe north, and Windhoek to Cape Town via Walvis Bay, Luderitz and Alexander 'Bay. The airline now operates an , extensive network of scheduled pas senger and cargo services from Miami i^long the Atlantic coast to New York in the north, and along the Gulf of Mexico ttxt New Orleans and Houston to San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco Vm the Pacinc coast. Transatlantic services link Miami and Tampa witn London, Paris, Zurich, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt, and New York with Amster dam. Authority is held to serve Tel-Aviv (awarded in May 1979), and a point in Costa Rica (awarded in January 1980), but not yet operated. Since July 1978 National has been the subject of take over bids by Texas International, Eastern, Air Florida and Pan American, the latter finally emerging as the winner with CAB approval in October 1979 followed by Presidential go-ahead in January 1980. Formal takeover date was January 7, with the cost to Pan Am estimated at $428-6m. Full integration of the two airlines will be implemented following the 1980 summer season and National is currently operating as a subsidiary of Pan Am. Simulators: one Link-Miles DC-10, one Singer-Link 727. Nationwide Air was formed in 1978 from a merger of the third-level airlines Akarana Air and Air North, both sub sidiaries of Car Haulaways. Plans in clude a scheduled car-ferry service between Wellington, Paraparaumu, Christchurch. and Nelson operated by Carvairs, and a scheduled cargo service between Auckland, Rotorua and Gis-borne. Nederlandse Luchtvaart Maatschappii (NLM City Hopper) was formed in 1966 as a wholly owned subsidiary of KLM to operate scheduled domestic pas senger services. These now link Amster dam with Groningen, Enschedei Eind hoven and Maastricht. International services began in 1975 and link Amster dam with Bremen, Dusseldorf, Antwerp, Brussels, Birmingham, Basle, Belfast, and Jersey and Guernsey. Rotterdam with Paris/Charles de Gaulle, London/ Heathrow and Guernsey; and Eindhoven with Hamburg, Guernsey, Paris/Charles de Gaulle and London/Gatwick. Nefertiti Airways was reported to have formed early in 1980 as a private com pany, to operate scheduled passenger services from Cairo to Tel-Aviv. Opera tions began on March 5 using a Boeing 707 bought from Geminair of Ghana. Muhamed Abdul Ghani is reported as the managing director. See also Lotus Airlines. New York Airways (NYA) was formed in August 1949 and began helicopter mail services among the New York area airports in October 1952. Passenger services began in 1953 and linked Newark, Kennedy and La Guardia with the Lower Manhattan World Trade Center/Battery Park City Heliport. Services to the Pan Am Building roof top heliport were operated from 1966 to 1968 and January to May 1977. NYA suspended operations in May 1979 when the airline's two Sikorsky S-61Ls, leased from General Electric Credit, were sold to Okanagan Helicopters. Re-equipment and refinancing plans are currently under study. Major stockholders are Pan Am (43 per cent) and John Hay Whitney (16 per cent). Nigeria Airways, known until 1971 as WAAC (Nigeria), began operations on October 1, 1958, taking over the Nigerian services formerly operated by the West African Airways Corporation, which it succeeded. The airline is now wholly Government-owned and operates an extensive network of domestic and regional scheduled passenger and cargo services from Lagos, Port Harcourt and Kano to paints in West Africa together with international routes to Beirut,
