Northern Airlines was formed in January 1980 following the takeover of * Alice Springs-based Connair by East-West Airlines. Stockholders in the new airline are East-West with 51 per cent and the Northern Territory Govern ment, currently holding the other 49 per cent while arrangements for the sale of shares to the public are finalised. Qonnair, formed by Eddie Connellan in July 1939 as Connellan Airways, operated a 25-point network of sched uled passenger and cargo services in the Northern Territory. These will con tinue under the new management, plus the addition of coastal patrol flights for the Commonwealth Government. Northward Airlines of St Albert, v Alberta, Canada, which took over Gate way Aviation in 1979, operated sched uled passenger services froni Calgary and Edmonton to points in the North west Territories and the Yukon area until March 1980. The company then ceased operations owing to financial problems. Northwest Airlines (Northwest Orient Airlines) was founded on August 1,1926, as Northwest Airways and adopted the present title in 1934. Transcontinental services began in 1945 and in 1947 the company started services to the Far East. Washington and Honolulu were added in 1948 followed by Taiwan in 1950. The current network of scheduled passenger and cargo services stretches across the United States, to Anchorage in Alaska to Edmonton and Winnipeg in Canada, and across the Pacific to Hawaii, Okinawa, Manila, Taipei, Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka and Hong Kong. In August 1977 authority was granted to operate transatlantic services from Seattle to Scotland (Prestwick), Denmark (Copen hagen), Sweden and Finland via Min neapolis-St Paul, and these began on March 31, 1979. Scheduled pas senger and cargo services are operated from Yellowknife to Coppermine, Lady Franklin Point, Cambridge Bay, Rankin Inlet and Frobisher Bay. Okanagan Helicopters, founded in 1947, is the largest helicopter operator in Canada and, together with its wholly owned subsidiaries, one of the largest in the world. The company is active in every field of helicopter activity, includ ing offshore and onshore oil and gas exploration, forestry, mining, survey ing, logging, construction, agriculture, patrol, rescue and salvage operations. Okanagan also operates a helicopter mountain-flying training school.
