FUGHT International, 3 January 198t 15 Well done! 1980 Royal Aeronautical Society awards THREE gold medals are awarded and three honorary fellows and a com panion elected at the Royal Aeronauti cal Society. Honorary fellowships go to engineer and combat aircraft de signer Ed Heinemann, British Caledonian Airways deputy chairman Sir Peter Masefield and British Aero space aircraft group chairman Sir Frederick Page. Marshall of Cam bridge (Engineering) chairman Sir Arthur Marshall becomes a Com panion. The RAeS Gold Medal goes to William Gharnley for his leadership in research and development organi sation and management. He is R&D establishments and research control ler at the Ministry of Defence (Pro curement Executive). Awarded the British Gold Medal is Alec Atkin for his leadership in in ternational aerospace organisation and management as managing director (military) of British Aerospace air craft group. For his work on microwave all- weather landing and guidance equip ment for V/Stol aircraft Derek Atter, manager of MEL's Madge Sea Harrier project, receives the Wakefield Gold Medal. • The RAeS has announced the judges panel for its young people's space competition. They are Prof Sir Hermann Bondi, Prof R. L. Boyd, Sir Monty Finniston, Sir Ieuan Maddock and Dame Margaret Weston. Ideas for experiments which could be per formed in Space aboard the Space Shuttle are sought. The society has obtained a reservation from Nasa for What's new FlightSafety International (Marine Air Terminal, La Guardia Airport, Flushing, New York; telephone [212] 476-5700) has developed a new audio visual self-learning programme to teach pilots and operators the best ways to handle hazardous materials on board aircraft. The course details con tainers that should be used, where they should be placed and notes materials that should not be carried on passenger aircraft. A new range of vacuum presses specifically designed for the aerospace industry has been introduced by Old Acre Engineering (Bath Road, Midg- ham, Reading, Berkshire; telephone 073521 2238). The presses feature an adjustable heating source which can be set to follow panel contours. a Get Away Special in which it is hoped the winning entry can be flown; the project is subject to adequate sponsorship being obtained. Closing date for the competition is February 2. Sikorsky has received the Army Avia tion Association of America (Lind bergh Chapter) Industry Award. The company is cited for its contribution to Army Aviation material readiness with the Black Hawk helicopter which "has established a remarkable record." Who's where Elected senior vice-president, finance, of Comsat is Carl Reber. New posi tions at the company's World Systems division include: Lawrence DeVore (v-p and general counsel), Lewis Meyer (v-p;- contracts and procure ment) and George Lawler (v-p, mar keting). New v-p and general manager of Bendix Corporation's engine products division is Domenic Altomare. New appointments at Raytheon in clude: Stanley Sharenson (manager, missile systems division's advanced systems centre), Everette Harper (v-p and manager, Washington DC opera tions) and Paul Pullen (manager, international accounting controls).
