68 fLIGHT International, 10 January 1981 Speedy Southwest A belated thankyou WHAT'S ON SIR—It was with great interest that I read your feature on Muse Air/ Southwest Airlines in the issue of December 6, 1980*. Back in 1976 I had a chance to use Southwest's services, and I feel that their success is due not only to their personal approach and very low fares but also to efficiency. I travelled from Houston to Dallas on a late Sunday afternoon. The 737 arrived about ten minutes before scheduled departure time, coming from Dallas, and left dead on time. The flight to Dallas was fully booked; probably the incoming flight was as well, for there was a huge crowd leaving the aeroplane. Southwest managed to disembark and embark a full load of passengers to gether with checked luggage all within ten minutes. Several weeks before that journey I flew in a Lufthansa 737 on a German domestic service from Hamburg to Nurnberg, calling at Hannover en route. The aircraft was scheduled to spend a full 45min on the ground at Hannover. Upon questioning a Luft hansa official as to the reason for this embarrassing delay, I was told they needed that time for the transfer of passengers and luggage to/from the Bremen-Stuttgart service, which also stopped at Hannover and remained on the ground for 45min. Bond (84 Trenchard Close, New ton, Nottingham NG138HH) is appeal ing for information, anecdotes and photographs on the Gloster Meteor for a book. Any material will be treated carefully and returned promptly. The Society of Friends of the Fleet Air Arm Museum welcomes new members who can help with restora tion work at the aircraft museum at RNAS Yeovilton. People who cannot give practical help but would like to support the Society are also invited to write to the secretary, Mr P. T. Hoskin, 48B Grove Avenue. Yeovil, Somerset, for application forms. The committee of the de Havilland Aeronautical Technical School Old Boys' Association is again organising events and a reunion at Hatfield in May 1981 is being planned. The asso ciation wants to contact members and find out what they are doing now, and if any retired members are willing to help with administration. Contact sec retary Mike Rogers, Drumnessie, Ivy House Lane, Berkhamsted, Herts HP4 2PP; telephone 04427 4127. SIR—Since my announcements in Flight (July 12, 1980) many people have been in touch with me, some asking for further details of the Frank Spencer Award for Outstand ing Achievement and others offering personal memories, photographs, etc, to help with the book I am writing about my husband, who died last year. I have been extremely grateful to everyone, and wish to explain my delay in replying. Our son James, who followed in his father's footsteps by "going solo" on his birthday three years ago and was helping me with the above projects, has tragically been killed, and I have been unable to put my mind to other matters. How ever, as soon as I am capable I will be contacting everyone, including the world-wide correspondents who con firm the present whereabouts and well-being of Chipmunk G-AORW. 63 Castle Street Melbourne Derbyshire MRS GENE M.
