r#* ll^^lM ^Miira iWri&jBi ^i^^il^^St^|j|^f<i^i^^M ^^^.'iilBW^wwwBt Military flight safety: 1981 reviewed THE second annual survey of mili tary accidents and incidents shows an increase in numbers over the 1980 figures. But it must be borne in mind that not all air arms publi cise accidents. So while every attempt has been made to make the listings as complete as possible, there may be a few accidents which are not in cluded. At first glance, the accidents might seem to have differing causes. But do they? Would a new phrase, "mission- fixation", fit the bill? The Royal Air Force call it press-on-itis. It is a killer disease. Is it really necessary to con tinue with half of your electrics/ hydraulics off line? Would it be safer to give TV and radio masts a wider berth? The guy cables extend quite a way out from a 1,000ft mast. Is it really worth taking risks just to make the squadron bosses' state board look nice? Perhaps the cause of mission fixation lies on the ground. Peer obsession? All the chinagraph ticks in the world are not worth a damn if you're dead. Trying to explain "tick- chasing" to a board of inquiry is not much fun either. Charity might begin at home; flight safety must.
