World airline directory All Nippon Airways was formed in December 1952 as the Japan Helicopter and Airplane Transport Co. Scheduled operations began in 1953, JHAT was merged with Far Eastern Airlines in 1958 and took over Fujita Airlines in 1963, Nakanihon Air Services in 1965, and Nagasaki Airways in 1967. Among the stockholders are the Nagoya Rail road, the Tokyu Corporation, and the Tokio Marine and Fire Insurance Co. Scheduled passenger and cargo services are operated to 33 cities in Japan, together with charter services to Hong Kong, Manila, Singapore, and Beijing (Shanghai). American Airlines was founded in 1934 as a direct successor to American Air ways, formed in 1930, and other prede cessor companies dating back to 1926. Currently operating a fleet of over 230 aircraft, American is one of the world's largest airlines by any yardstick, and in the past has sponsored designs such as the DC-3, CV-240, Electra, CV-990, DC-7 and DC-10. A network of sched uled passenger and cargo services extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts, plus services to Toronto and Montreal in the north and Mexico City, Acapulco, Guadalajara and Puerto Val- larta to the south. In 1971 the airline absorbed Trans Caribbean Airways and began flying to Puerto Rico, the US Vir gin Islands (as American Inter Island), Aruba, Curacao and Haiti. American started services to Bermuda, Barbados and Santo Domingo in 1975 through rights acquired in a route exchange with Pan Am. The airline also flies to the Bahamas, Jamaica and other Carib bean points, and in 1979 added a num ber of US mainland destinations includ ing cities in the southeast, midwest, and southwest. Subsidiaries include Sky Chefs, an in-flight catering, restaurant and retail shop operation; AA Develop ment Corporation and AA Energy Cor poration, engaged in the development of energy resources; AA Training Cor poration, which markets flight and ground-training resources, equipment and services; and Agency Data Sys tems, marketing mini computer-based accounting systems for travel agents.
