Japan Air Lines (JAL—Nihon Koku Kabushiki Kaisha) is the successor to the original privately owned company of the same name which began operat ing in October 1951. The new JAL came into being in October 1953 as the national airline of Japan with a Govern ment holding of 50 per cent, since re duced to 44-3 per cent. In 1978 the air line was reorganised into five operating divisions: sales; transport; maintenance; operations; and freight. An extensive network of scheduled passenger and cargo services links Tokyo, Osaka, Niigata, Sapporo, Fukuoka, Kagoshima and Nagoya with numerous points in Asia and the Middle East, Australia (Sydney), New Zealand (Auckland), North America (Anchorage, Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York), Central America (Mexico City), South America (Rio de Janeiro), and Europe (London, Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Zurich, Rome, Athens, Madrid) and Moscow. Subsidiary companies are Japan Asia Airways, South West Air Lines, Japan Air Lines Development Company, Airport Ground Service and Japan Creative Tours. Japan Asia Airways was formed on August 8, 1975, as a wholly owned sub sidiary of Japan Air Lines to operate scheduled passenger and cargo ser vices, as well as charters, between Japan and Taiwan (Formosa). Ser vices now operate from Tokyo, Osaka and Okinawa to Taipei, Hong Kong and Manila. JAL ceased flying the Japan- Taiwan route in 1974 as part of an agreement with CAAC to operate ser vices to the Chinese mainland. Jetwest International Airways applied for operating authority in October 1981, planning to start low-fare scheduled services from Las Vegas to Oakland, San Jose, Phoenix, and Albuquerque, to be extended to include routes to Burbank and San Antonio. Jugoslovenski Aerotransport (JAT— Jugoslav Airlines) was formed in 1947 and is wholly state-owned. An extensive network of scheduled passenger and cargo services is operated from and among 16 domestic points to 37 cities in Western Europe, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, North Africa, North America, the Middle and Far East. It continues the opera tions of Karhumaki Airways, formed in 1951 as a subsidiary of the old estab lished Karhumaki aircraft manufactur ing and maintenance organisation. Geological survey work is also carried out. During 1962 Finnair acquired a 29 per cent interest in Karair, since in creased to 35 per cent. Scheduled, charter, survey, and aero-medical flights are operated to various points in Canada's Northwest Territories from Inuvik and Resolute Bay. Routes to Western Canada are operated from Calgary, Alberta, and Dawson Creek, British Columbia. The company also offers a leasing service out of the Calgary base. Kenya Airways was formed on January 22, 1977, by the Kenyan Government to operate domestic and international scheduled services from Kenya when East African Airways ceased operations owing to severe financial problems. Scheduled passenger services began early in February 1977 and now link Nairobi with Cairo, Athens, Rome, Zurich, London, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Khartoum, Jeddah, Karachi, Bombay, Addis Ababa, Mogadishu, Seychelles, Kampala, Salisbury, Mauritius and Lusaka. Scheduled passenger services began in February 1975 from Ercan (Tymbou) Airport, eight miles east of Nicosia, to Istanbul, Ankara and Adana.
