Reconnaissance Mirage F.1 flies SECOND prototype Dassault-Breguet Mirage F.1CR is under construction. The first prototype, converted from a production F.1C-200 interceptor, con tinues flight-tests equipped with Omera panoramic and frame cameras, SAT infrared linescanner, Sagem inertial navigation, and Thornson-CSF Cyrano IV radar. The French Air Force has ordered 62 F.lCRs to re place Mirage IIIR and RD aircraft of the 33rd Reconnaissance Wing based at Strasbourg. --r~ The Mirage F.ICR will replace French Air Force Mirage IIIRs and IIIRDs from 1983 onwards Casualties... • A Royal Air Force Jaguar GR.l of 54 Sqn crashed into the North Sea on April 2. The pilot, Capt Thor Bjorn- stadt, a Norwegian Air Force ex change officer, was killed. • A US Air Force F-15 Eagle crashed into the Pacific north-west of Okinawa on April 6. The pilot, Capt Rick Car rier of the 18th TFS, Kadena airbase, ejected safely 40 n.m. north-west of his base. He was picked up by a US Marine Corps helicopter. • A United States Air Force C-130 Hercules crashed in a mountainous area of north-east Turkey on April 13. There were no survivors of the 28 persons on board. Unconfirmed re ports state that the aircraft was on fire before hitting a mountain. The Hercules had been airborne for 30min out of Erzurum. • A Royal Air Force Phantom FGR.2 of 228 OCU crashed just west of its base at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire, on April 14; the crew ejected safely. Royal Australian Air Force and Navy crews are operating UH-I Iroquois in the Sinai as part of the United Nations' Observer Force. The aircraft are based at Etam No Falklands SR-71 flights THE Pentagon denies reports that Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbirds" are providing the UK with reconnaissance data on Argentina and the Falkland Islands. The Pentagon does not nor mally comment on SR-71 operations, but is making an exception in denying Blackbird overflights "after consider ing the situation". The spokesman does not deny reconnaissance-satel lite operations over the South Atlan tic area. Reagan clears Hercules for Iraq PRESIDENT REAGAN'S Administra tion has cleared Iraq to buy up to 12 Lockheed L-100 Hercules, the com mercial version of the C-130. In Feb ruary Iraq was removed from the US sales blacklist, composed of countries embargoed for supporting terrorism. The US State Department says Iraq must "promise" not to use the Hercules for combat operations. Washington critics note that Israel made similar promises but subse quently used its F-15s and F-16s in supposedly proscribed missions. Tracer... RAAF helps typhoon victims ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE C-130 Hercules have ferried disaster- relief supplies to the Tonga Islands after the group was hit by Hurricane Isaac. Eleven C-130s have airlifted two RAAF UH-1 Iroquois helicopters, 83 troops, 500 tents, 9,000 cans of fish, 1,000kg of rice, 90 electric generators, and a water-purifying system. Pangai, a town on Ha'apai Island in the centre of the Tonga group, had 90 per cent of its buildings destroyed in the storm and is receiving most of the Australian aid. 1034 Fuji has delivered the last of 50 T-3 basic trainers to the Japanese Air Self-Defence Force. Lockheed has delivered the first Rivet Fire EC-130 to the US Air Force 41st Electronic Countermeasures Squadron at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona. ITT and Sanders will co-operate on development and production of the ALQ-169 electronic oountermeasures system for the Grumman EA-6B Prowler. Japan's Maritime Self-Defence Force is to set up a search and rescue unit on Iwo Jima with two Sikorsky/Mit subishi S-61 Sea Kings. Soviet Tu-95 Bear Ds have resumed flights as far south as Okinawa. A penetration by two Bears on March 3 was the first since July 17 last year. The Bears were met by six Japanese fighters. Blue Impulse, the Japan Air Self- Defence Force aerobatic team, has received the last of its six Mitsubishi T-2(BI)s. The team retired its F-86F Sabres last December and will give i its first T-2 display in July. Indian Air Force Fairchild C-119G Packets are to be replaced by Antonov An-32 Clines. The IAF operates some 40 Packets, but an Indian Government statement does not disclose the num ber of An-32s to be bought. I West Germany will buy up to 500 | Hughes AGM-65B Maverick air-to- ground missiles for use on F-4F Phantoms. ; The US Coast Guard has taken de livery of its first Dassault-Breguet HU-25A Gardian, a Falcon 20 modi fied for inshore maritime patrol. The delivery was delayed by FAA certifica tion needed for the Garrett ATF3-6 turbofan engines. The 41 aircraft on order will be delivered at a rate of three every two months.
