Navajo Usually in its Chieftain guise, this is Piper's largest piston twin and its main public-transport product. The basic eight-seat Navajo was flown in 1964 and the basic design has remained in production for corporate and com mercial applications ever since. The stretched ten-seat Navajo Chieftain, powered by counter-rotating turbo- charged Avco Lycoming TIO-540J2BD engines, has been in production since 1972. Price is about $380,000. T-1020 and T-1040 These types have been developed from the very successful Navajo Chieftain; and where the latter was originally designed as a corporate aircraft which found itself later a popu lar small commuter, these two are Piper's carefully aimed 1982 attack on the commuter business. The turboprop 1040 will be displayed in front of an in ternational audience for the first time FLIGHT International, IS May I9S2 at this month's Hanover Air Show. The 1020 is based on the Chieftain, but has an airline-style interior with an Unseat cabin. Engines are Avco Lycom ing turbocharged TIO-540s. Price is $453,000. The T-1020 has also been given an emergency gear extension system, which uses four nitrogen bottles and in dividual lines to the aircraft's nose and main landing undercarriage, and a Bendix Series 1200 magneto system, with dual individually driven magnetos, to facilitate cold-weather starting. The T-1040 is the Chieftain fuselage, like the 1020, but has the wings, engines, nose, and empennage of the Cheyenne 1. The result is a nin-passenger twin- turboprop aircraft certificated for single-pilot operation. Engines are Pratt & Whitney PT6A-lls, which give the aircraft a maximum cruise speed of 243kt. Price is $896,648. It is one of the two new ships that have gone for General Electric CT7 engines instead of Pratt & Whitney PW100 or PT6 (CN-235 is the other). It makes no pretence at Stol performance, going all out to squeeze maximum carrying 1257
