C-9A Nightingale transports for medi cal education duties. At Sembach 39 OV-lOAs are deployed with the 601st TAC Control Wing, which also has seven CH-53Cs. Located at RAF Wood- bridge, UK, the 67th ARRS is con trolled by MAC, but provides rescue helicopters and aircraft for all of Europe in the shape of four HH-53Cs and seven HC-130H/Ns. A number of sup port units are based in Europe, flving T-39s, C-12As, VC-140Bs, and UH-lNs. Detachments of EC-135s, RC-135s, SR-71s, and U-2s also operate from Mildenhall in the UK. Pacific Air Forces, with its head quarters at Hickham, Hawaii, com prises the 5th AF based in Japan and the 13th AF in the Philippines. Main units are as follows: under 5th AF Command, 8th TFW at Kunsan and Taegu, Korea, 48 F-16s; the 497th TFS, Taegu AB, has converted to F-4ES, the 25th TFS has converted to A-lOs; 18th TFW at Kadena AB, Japan, with three squadrons of F-15C/Ds and some E-3A Sentry Awacs. The 3rd TFW, 13th AF, is based at Clark AB, Philippines, and flies one squadron of F-4Es, a com posite squadron of F-4E/F-4Gs and a squadron (26th TF Training Sqn) of F-5Es delivered in 1978, while at Hick- ham itself a support wing has a num ber of EC-135s and T-33As. Wheeler AFB, Hawaii, is also home for an 0-2 unit, the 22nd TASS. Alaskan Air Command operates from Elmendorf AFB and has two F-15 squadrons (21st and 43rd TFS) and an HH-3E/HC-130 squadron for SAR duties (71st ARRS). Also opera ted is the 25th TAC Support Sqn, USAF E-3A Sentrys are being retrofitted with overwater target detection capability WORLD'S AIR FORCES with five 0-2s at Eielson and an Air Guard unit with eight C-130s (176th TAG) at Anchorage. SAC's 6th Wing operates KC-135s from Eielson and two E-3As are permanently based at Elmendorf. Military Airlift Command includes the Air Weather Service, the Aero space Rescue and Recovery Service and the Aeromedical Airlift Wing. Two Air Forces, the 21st and 22nd, incor porate 13 squadrons with 270 C-141s and four squadrons with 79 C-5As. The C-141B modification programme is completed and the wing modification programme for the Galaxy fleet is under way with completion set for 1987. Six other squadrons have 23 C-9As (including three VC-9s with the 89th MAW), 11 VC-140s, two VC-137S, three VC-137Bs, 11 C-135s, and 13 WC-130s. The large tactical force of C-130E/H Hercules has some 270 aircraft flying with 14 active AF units, while the supporting Air Guard inventory has 13 groups and five wings of C-130s. Also MAC-assigned are two ANG groups flying HH-3/HC-130 rescue air craft. Three T-39 training/liaison units are attached to the 89th MAW with 105 aircraft. Helicopters include more than 120 UH-lFs for missile site sup port, 22 UH-lHs for base rescue duties, 49 HH-lNs, 46 HH-3Es, and 21 of 40 HH-53B/Cs in USAF service. Air Training Command with head quarters at Randolph AFB, Tex, oper ates more than 1,620 aircraft, includ ing 680 T-37s, 693 T-38s, 102 T-41s, and 13 T-43s. The Navigator Training Wing at Mather AFB, Calif, operates as a joint USAF/USN/USMC/Coast Guard unit with the T-43s. At the USAF Academv, Colorado Springs, two DHC UV-18B Twin Otters, delivered in 1977, provide platforms for cadet parachute training. The Air Force Reserve is a large unmobilised training and support ele ment with headquarters at Robins AFB, Ga, and it flies many of the roles of the active AF. The flying units have steadily been converting to more modern equipment, such as A 10s and F-4s, to be followed in the future with F-16s. Reserve elements are divided into three air forces (4th, 10th and 14th AF) within the USA, flying 12 C-130 squadrons, two A-7A squadrons, one C-123K squadron, three KC-135 squadrons, one F-4C squadron, four F-4D squadrons, one F-105D/F, five A-10A, and four ARRS squadrons, with HH-1H, HH-3E, and HC-130 air craft, one CH-3E unit, and two squa drons with WC130s and AC-130s. United States Navy To counter the continued build-up of the Soviet Navy, the Reagan administration has author ised an increase in the US Navy from 13 carrier battle groups to 15 carrier battle groups, with a 600-ship Navy as the eventual 1990s target. The thirteenth carrier, the Nimitz- class USS Carl Vinson, will be fully operational next year; number 14, USS i\oosevelt, CVN-71, is building; and another Nimitz-class carrier is to fol low. Each carrier operates about 90- 95 aircraft as a Carrier Air Wing.
