WORLD'S AIR FORCES is in service with six others to follow. A secondary Lynx mission is over-the- horizon targeting for the Type 122's primary armament of eight McDonnell Douglas Harpoon anti-ship missiles. The Sea King Mk 41s are primarily land- based and are used for search and rescue. The four IAI Westwinds are used as target tugs and "aggressors", acting as enemy targets in ship defence exercises. A utility squadron operates about ten Do28 Skyservants while each airbase owns one or two Do28s for general liaison work. Heeresflieger. The army aviation corps' search for a second-generation anti-tank helicopter appears to be no nearer fruition. The Panzerabwherhubschrau- ber-2 (PAH-2) will eventually replace the MBB BO105P. Armed with the Euro- missile HOT anti-tank missile, deliveries of this helicopter in its PAH-1 role are about half-way. In the search for PAH-2, several types have been evaluated, in cluding the Westland Lynx and Hughes AH-64A Apache, while Bell is confident with its Model 249 Advanced Cobra. But the Heeresflieger is keen to retain a cabin in its PAH-2 enabling the helicopter to emplace infantry anti-tank teams. This could act to the detriment of dedicated anti-tank helicopters such as the Apache and yet-to-fly Agusta A. 129 Mongoose, another contender. Previously, the widely geographically- separated Corps of the German Army have driven a 212-aircraft PAH-2 requirement, and this high number has thus restricted the Service to the less- expensive models. But the 212-aircraft need is no longer held to be sacrosanct and Hughes' offer of massive offsets might seduce German industry away from the joint Franco-German PAH-2 requirement which has produced many paper designs, but as yet, little else. Again, Westland is offering the WG30-300, while Sikorsky is a strong contender with the UH-60A Blackhawk. Bell reckons that the best UH-1 replacement is a UH-1 and has just re-opened the production line to cater for replacement orders now starting to come in. The "new" UH-ls will have minimal chan ges, being built to the latest modifica tion state with modern avionics where requested. Meanwhile, the Heeresflieger con tinues to provide liaison, communica tions, observation, and anti-tank facili ties for the Bundeswehr. The Army's three corps each has its integral Avia tion Command. Each of these has a heavy transport regiment of two squadrons of 16 CH-53Gs; a medium regiment, again of two squadrons, operating 20 UH-lDs each; and a light transport/liaison squadron operating Alouettes, now being replaced gradually with BO105Ms. Up to 227 BO105Ms will eventually be required; 100 Alouettes will be replaced in the first phase, the remainder with PAH-2 in 1986.
