WORLD'S AIR FORCES PHILIPPINES Philippine Air Force A large part of the PAF inventory is dedicated to counter - insurgency strikes against guerrilla forces seeking to oust the unpopular President Marcos from power. The OV-10 Broncos have supplanted the ageing T-28Ds in the Coin role; the Trojans will be phased out shortly. The three Fokker F.27 Maritimes are the latest type to join the PAF, com plementing the Navy's B-N Islander in sealane patrol and SAB. The re cently formed Army Aviation Battalion is slowly increasing in size and will soon receive ten Hughes 500 for the scout/escort role. TAIWAN Chinese Nationalist Air Force Tai wan's problems in procuring a new fighter continue. The Chinese People's Republic has succeeded in getting sales of the General Dynamics F-16, the Northrop Tigershark, and the General Dynamics F-16/79 blocked by strong diplomatic pressure in Washing ton. Taiwan's need to replace its age ing fleets of F-100 Super Sabres, F-104 Starfighters, and F-5As has now been filled with the Northrop F-5E Tiger. The US Government will supply $240 million in equipment for the aircraft, including the engines and avionics. The total cost of the co-production will be $622 million with the Taichung Aero Industry Development Centre building 30 F-5Es and 30 two-seat F-5Fs initially. Sixteen ex-Italian Air Force F-104S Starfigbters will also go to Taiwan as interim replacements for the 15 surviving F-104As. An indige nous basic trainer, the YAT-3, is also on order with an initial batch of 50 aircraft. The counter-insurgency fleet has been increased with the delivery of eight OV-10 Broncos from US Air Force stocks, bringing the total in service to about 40 aircraft, while another six Broncos are still to be delivered. Combat attrition is thought to have accounted for at least three OV-lOs. Eight F-5Es and two RF-5Es are on order and will join the two air-defence squadrons of Tiger lis in service. The 40 obsolescent Fairchild C-123 Providers are well overdue for replacement and 20 Nurtanio-built C.212 Aviocars are thought to be on order to replace them with 20 GAF Nomad N.228 Missionmasters joining the RTAF for light-transport and counter-insurgency. The Nomads will complete delivery by September 1984. The contract is worth £17-5 million. Also on order for the Coin support role are two CT30H-30 stretched Her cules. Thailand is also the launch customer for the RFB Fantrainer. Seventy aircraft will replace first the CT.4 Airtrainers, then the SF.260s, and finally the small fleet of T-37Cs, which might then be converted to A-37Bs for Coin.
