DEFENCE IAI develops air-launched Gabriel TEL AVIV Two air-launched versions of the Gabriel III anti-ship missile are in advanced devel opment at Israel Aircraft In dustries. Both Gabriel III A/S variants have the same fire- and-forget and fire-and- update guidance modes as their ship-launched parent, and are suitable for the F-4 Phantom, A-4 Skyhawk, Kfir C-2, and Westwind Sea Scan. The initial air-launched Gabriel III has the same rocket motor as the ship- launched missile, and has a range of 40km. The second version has a new, enlarged sustainer motor which ex tends range to more than 60km. The Gabriel III A/S can be launched from alti tudes of 300ft to 30,000ft. The missile cruises at 20m, and the final approach height is preset at 1 • 5m, 2 • 5m, or 4m, accord ing to sea state. In fire-and-forget mode, Gabriel III A/S is guided in- ertially to a preset point, after which the X-band, frequency- agile, active radar seeker is switched on to acquire, lock • vK^SH ^ flpp' V,-"". ::• rW-'5'fectSS|'IH8iS-S3j|5 b. Fire-and-update mode uses a datalink to send commands to the missile after launch. Seeker switch-on is delayed, reducing the chances of de tection and deception, and al lowing the operator to prevent incorrect targets being ac quired. Fire-and-update is in tended for larger aircraft equipped with a track-while- scan radar. IAI Gabriel Mklll anti-ship missile" F-4 Phantoms will provide another mount for Gabriel III Air-to-surface Garibaldi launch set for March The Italian Navy helicopter carrier Guiseppe Garibaldi is to be launched in March. Shipbuilder Cantieri Navali Riuniti (CNR) has completed the hull to flight-deck level. Garibaldi has a 174m-long flight deck and will carry up to 18 Agusta SH-3D Sea King helicopters. Air-defence arm ament will comprise two Albatros surface-to-air mis sile launchers and three twin- 40mm Dardo gun turrets. Long-range armament in cludes four Otomat anti-ship missile launchers. Because of its cost, Garibaldi may prove to be the only vessel of its class. The Italian Navy is unlikely to place any further orders. Other carrier-operating nations—Argentina, Brazil, and India—are thought to lack the necessary funds. India has just extensively reworked INS Vikrant to accept Sea Harriers. Following Britain's decision not to sell HMS Invincible, Australia has resumed discussions with the US builders of LPH amphibious assault carriers. Spain recently launched its ski-jump-equipped sea control ship Principe de Austurias. This vessel will operate AV- 8A Matadors and, eventually, AV-8Bs. FLIGHT International, 1 January 1983
