BUSINESS AVIATION "Flying pick-up truck" takes off A new aircraft based upon Cessna's 337 Skymaster has entered the utility "flying pick-up truck" market. Spec trum Aviation has produced the SA-550 Spectrum-One, which first flew on February 1. The nose engine of the orig inal Cessna push-and-pull configuration has been dispensed with, and the rear engine is replaced by a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-27 driving a reversible-pitch Hartzell propeller. The new project's potential roles include cargo, ambulance, surveillance, commuter, and mixed oper ations. A longer fuselage gives a flat floor for cargo up to 19ft long. Spectrum Aircraft (7120 Hayvenhurst Avenue, Van Nuys Airport, California 91406; telephone (213) 782-2680) has designed the aircraft for low-cost, easy loading, and reliable and easily maintainable short- field performance. It is said to take off in less than 450ft (675ft to clear 50ft) with a full 2,2001b payload, and to land in 675ft at sea level over a 50ft obstacle. 646 To provide the length needed to balance the loss of forward-engine weight, the fuselage is extended ahead of the wing spar. The new nose section is longer than the standard original, being stretched forward of the wind screen, and tailbooms are also extended. A nose door allows very long items to be loaded from the front. The parallel cabin section between wing spar and windscreen accom modates a large three-piece cargo door on the starboard side.
