INDUSTRY Finnair expands JT8Dwork HELSINKI ~ Finnair has signed a three - year JT8D maintenance contract with British Midland. Finnair claims to be the only engine overhaul shop in Europe offering conversion of the JT8D-15 to -15A and JT8D-17 to -17A standard with reworks "performed completely in- house, including first- and second-stage compressor- vane re-cambering". Swissair, Icelandair, and Aero Lloyd are among other current customers. New products being marketed by Finnair include a long-range tank installation for the DC-10-30; light-weight galleys for the ATR 42; and a new light-weight food-service trolley which has been in operation for several months (Colin Molloy, sales manager technical services, Finnair Engineering and Mainte nance, 01530 Helsinki, Finland; tel Helsinki 8251). A land anchor of revolutionary design has been introduced by Duckbill Anchors for tethering aircraft and helicopters. Prices range from £2 • 60 to £13-48 including cable. The new anchor is made of corrosion-resistant tenzalloy aluminium, and is claimed to hold down up to 7,000 times its own weight and to be about ten per cent the weight and volume of competitive anchors. Stuart Mattews is in charge. Northrop has an eight-year contract worth more than $22 million from Cessna to provide pilots and mainte nance engineers to train US Navy undergraduate flight officers at Pensacola, Florida. The work will be done by Northrop Worldwide Aircraft Services. Northrop also has contracts to train the Royal Saudi Air Force and the air forces of Morocco and Sudan.
