WORLD'S AIR FORCES trainers, some of the CF-104Ds being flown in the ECM role. The remaining combat units are made up of 725 and 729 Esk at Karup with Saab Drakens, the latter provid ing day and night reconnaissance for the Danish forces. A total of 51 F-35, RF-35 and TF-35 Drakens was purchased and 43 remain in service, the 16 F-35s being mod ernised for the ground-attack role with HUDs and new weapon sights. Air Material Command consists of two squadrons, 721 Esk with Hercules, Gulf- stream Ills, and three T-17 Supporters, and 722 Esk with S-61A SAR helicopters; both units are based at Vaerlose. Pilot training begins at the Flying School at Avno on Sup porters, students moving to the USA for a course on USAF T-37s before returning to Denmark. As well as the retirement of the C-47 from the RDAF, the Danish Navy withdrew its Alouette III fleet at the end of last year. Djibouti Force Aerienne de Djibouti Situated at the mouth of the Red Sea, Djibouti holds considerable strategic value, and France maintains close ties with this former colony. At the request of the Djibouti Government, France bases 3,250 men in the country com prising infantry, armoured and artillery battalions, ten Mirage IIICs, plus some Gazelles and Pumas. The present FAD force is made up of two Noratlas transports, a Reims-built Cessna Stationair 6, an Alouette II, and a Rallye 235GT. A single Mystere 20 is used by the President. Reports that 12 Wessex have been purchased appear to be unfounded. Dominican Republic Fuerza Aerea Dominicans National resources remain strictly limited, and as a consequence the Dominican Air Force con tinues to operate some of the oldest front line equipment in the world. The only jet aircraft in service are six surviving D.H. Vampire F.1/FB.50 fighters of more than 30 bought from Sweden in the mid-Fifties. They equip a single fighter squadron at Santo Domingo, alongside a fighter-bomber squadron flying more than a dozen moder nised F-51D Mustangs of 42 purchased from Sweden: Also in this unit are six T-28Ds. About three B-26Ks are reportedly opera tional with the bomber squadron, and two PBY-5A Catalinas are thought to be still in service for MR and SAR. The transport force has five C-47s and five C-46s, three Beavers, two Queen Airs, a Cessna 310, and an Aero Commander. Helicopters total three Alouette II/IIIs, two Bell 205As, two Sikorsky H-19s, two Hiller UH-12Es, seven Hughes OH-6As, and a single SA.365C Dauphin 2 for VIP use. The training unit, also at Santo Domingo, oper ates four Cessna T-41Ds and four T-6s. Dubai See United Arab Emirates. Jaguars and Canberras handle the strike/bomber role, Mirage F.ls the interceptor task, while Strikemasters and Cessna A-37s operate in the counter-insurgency role. All three front line squadrons operate within Grupo 21. The FAE has two transport elements, a Military Air Transport Group and TANE (Transportes Aereos Nacionales Ecuatorianos). The latter was formed in 1962 and operates scheduled passenger and cargo flights throughout the country. Both the Army and the Navy have air components, the former operating five Buf falo in addition to the usual range of Ameri can light aircraft.
