WORLD'S AIR FORCES the difficulty in obtaining a new fighter to re place them has prompted the purchase of 39 F-104Gs and 27 TF-104Gs previously used by the Luftwaffe Training Wing at Luke AFB. These will join more than 30 in service with the 3rd Wing and the single squadron of F-104As. The 20th Troop Carrier Wing continues to operate two squadrons of C-119Gs one squad ron pf C-123Ks and two squadrons of C-46s. A CNAF Reserve Force has two squadrons of F-IOOD/Fs, two of F-5As and two F-86F units. An indigenous basic trainer, the YAT-3, is also on order with an initial batch of 50 aircraft. Tanzania Tanzanian People's Defence Force The Air Wing of the TPDF has a Chinese-supplied com bat element, while Western types make up the remainder of aircraft in service. China supplied one squadron each of 15 Shenyang F-7s (MiG-21), ten Shenyang F-6s (MiG-19) and ten F-4s (MiG-17F), along with two Shen yang F-2 (MiG-15UTI) trainers. The transport force operates six DHC-5D Buffaloes, three freight-configured HS.748s, and a VIP F.28-3000. Lighter cargoes are carried by six Cessna 310s, one An-2, and two Cessna 404s. Training is on five Piper Cherokee 140s, while a Cherokee 6 is used for liaison. Helicopters include two AB.206s, two Bell 47Gs, and two Italian-built CH-47C Chinooks. 'A civil- registered HS.748 is also flown by the Air Wing in the VIP role. Thailand Royal Thai Air Force Faced with frequent incursions along the eastern border by the domi nant and aggressive Vietnamese People's Republic, Thailand is expanding her small Air Force. The counter-insurgency fleet has been increased with the delivery of 14 OV-10 Broncos from US Air Force stocks, bringing the total in service to about 45 aircraft. Combat attrition is thought to have accounted for at least three OV-lOs. Eight F-5Es and two RF-5Es are on order and will join No 101 and 401 Sqn on air-defence duties. The 40 obso lescent Fairchild C-123 Providers are well overdue for replacement and 20 Nomad N.22B Missionmasters have been ordered as a partial answer. The first aircraft is due to be delivered in September 1983; they will be used for light- transport and counter-insurgency. Also bought for the Coin support role are two C-130H-30 stretched Hercules. Thailand is also the launch customer for the RFB Fantrainer, 47 of which will replace first the CT.4 Airtrainers, then the SF.260s, and finally the small fleet of T-37Cs, which might then be converted into A-37Bs for Coin. A previously unrecorded acquisition are three IAI Arava delivered in 1979, possibly to the Air Force. Two ex-Malaysian F-5Bs have been added to the strength of 103 Sqn, while the crash of a Merlin IV last year leaves only three Type No Role F-5E/F Tiger RF-5E Tiger F-5A/B RF-5A AU-23A Peacemaker A-37B Dragonfly OV-10C Bronco T-28D Trojan AC-47 Cessna 0-1 C-47 RC-47 C-123 Provider N.22B Missionmaster C-130H-30 Hercules C-130H Hercules Merlin IVA HS.748 T-37C T-33A/RT-33A SF.206MT CT-4 Airtrainer DHC Chipmunk RFB Fantrainer S-58T UH-1H Navy F.27 Maritime HU-16B Albatross S-2F Tracker CL-215 Cessna 337 Bell 212 UH-1H Army Cessna 0-1 UH-1B/D CH-47A Chinook OH-23F Bell 206 FH-1100 Beech 99 Border Police DHC-4 Caribou Skyvan/Porter AU-23 Peacemaker Do28 Skyservant CT-4 Airtrainer Bell 204B Bell 205/205A Bell 206B 40/6 24 12/14 4 31 30 45 40 4-5 10-12 20 6 40/1 20 2 3 2/1 1 14 20/4 12 24 10 47 18 60 3 2 10 2 6 10 4 90 90 4 6 3 12 "1 3 3/4 3 3 1 10 11/2 4 Int Recce Attack Recce Coin Coin Coin Coin Gunship FAC Transport Comms relay Transport/ VIP Coin Spt Coin Spt Transport Photo/VIP VIP Train Train/recce Train Train Train Train Trans Utility MP MP/SAR ASW SAR Strike Utility SAR FAC Utility Trans Utility Train Train VIP Trans Trans Coin Liaison Train Utility Utility Utility Royal Thai Air Force RT-33A • Mil I ttk I, liillliiiBllil if &m IS|i'- \^m\mmt'L^m^- 5 '•w!..?»w»j'':; Ipsft&K' . . .J- : • •••ijijjji -'•'"UtHftK J •NRniSSSIiMH! • ?m §teilil§iflli^ ftS§PltPr%. HEHL * in service of six delivered in 1977-79. Royal Thai Navy Announced last year was an order for three Fokker F.27 Maritimes for delivery in April, May, and June 1984. With updated avionics, and weapons pylons, these aircraft will replace the two Grumman HU-16B Albatross, and join two CL-215 amphibians on coastal patrol and SAR, leaving the squadron of S-2F Trackers free for their main role of ASW. Six Cessna 337 Skymasters are used for light strike duties, while a squadron of C-47s operates in the transport role. Helicopter assets include Bell 212s and UH-1H. Royal Thai Army A variety of US-supplied fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft—including a force of some 90 Cessna O-ls for observation and liaison duties and a Beech 99 for transport work—are flown in support of the Thai Army ground force. Helicopters include 16 FH-llOOs, three Bell 206s, six OH-23Fs and about 90 UH- lB/Ds; four Boeing CH-47As are flown on troop transport and supply duties. Togo Force Aerienne Togolaise The FAT has expanded from a transport-only force estab lished in the Sixties to include some strike capability based on five Alpha Jets received in 1981, six Embraer EMB.326GC Xavantes, and five ex-Luftwaffe CM.170 Magisters. Two DHC-5D Buffaloes, from a reduced Zaire order, provide transport with two MH.1521M Broussards and two Reims F.337s for the liaison role. Governmental VIP flights are per formed by a Boeing 720, an SA.330 Puma and an F.28-1000 bought in 1975, and an ex-French AF DC-8-55F purchased in January this year. Trinidad and Tobago Air Division, Ministry of National Security Formed in the mid-Seventies, the air element of the Govenment Agency operates two SA.341G Gazelles and two Sikorsky S-76s. The machines are used for general surveillance, casualty evacuation, SAR, and liaison. Tunisia Tunisian Republican Air Force Tunisia has announced a modest five-year moderni sation plan for its armed forces. The TRAF is at last to receive six Northrop F-5E Tigers and two F-5F two-seaters in the next two years for $200 million. These aircraft will replace the survivors of 12 F-86F Sabres supplied by the USA in 1969, and now used mainly as trainers. At present, the TRAF's main strike potential consists of eight Aermacchi MB.326Bs bought in 1965 and equipping a dual role strike/trainer squadron, plus two survivors of four two-seat MB.326LTs and eight single-seat MB.326KTs in another unit. Basic training is on 12 SF.260WTs delivered in 1974, supplemented by six SF.260Cs received in mid-1978 and 12 T-6s. The transport force operates three Flamants. The helicopter element is comparatively large, with 18 AB.205s bought by the Army but operated by the Air Force, and six UH-lHs supplied under military aid by the USA. Eight Alouette lis, six Alouette Ills, and a Puma complete the force.
