WORLD'S AIR FORCES United Arab Emirates (Dubai) British Aerospace Hawk Belgium, Denmark, Norway and West Germany, are supplying Turkey with more than 130 surplus F-104G Starfighters and at least 23 F-100 Super Sabres. The THK has a current order of battle totalling four squadrons with F-4E Phantoms, one sqn with RF-4Es, four sqns with F-104Gs and two with the F-104S variant, two sqns with F-lOOs, and five sqns with F-5A/RF-5As. The training units are also benefiting from the supply of some ex-French T-33/RT-33s, the first batch of five aircraft being delivered in October 1981. The THK is believed to be the customer for 25 Bel/UH-lHs and four elint versions. Turkey is keen to establish its own industry; plans to produce the F-5E Tiger to replace F-5As have once more been delayed, and the likelihood of it ever going ahead seem remote. Turk Kara Kuvvetlari The Army's requirement for up to 100 anti-tank helicopters has still not been met. Licence production of the Hughes 500MD was planned, but is yet to start. The Service operates some 100 AB.205s, some armed with machine guns, backed by AB.206s and AB.204s. A batch of 30 Hughes 300C helicopters has been ordered, ten deliv ered in 1982 for training and the remainder for utility duties. Fixed-wing types include 40 Bell- anca Citabrias for basic training, Beech T-42 Barons for advanced training, and Do28Ds, Do27s, and Cessna 421s for liaison work. Turkish Navy Naval aviation is operated by the Air Force and consists of one squadron of S-2 Trackers based at Topel and six AB.212 ASW for shipboard operation. Uganda Uganda Army Air Force Since the over throw of the Amin regime in 1979, things have improved little in Uganda. The country's econ omy is still weak and shows no immediate signs of improvement. The Ugandan Army is not yet a cohesive force being still subject to the old tribal rivalries exploited by Amin. The air element's aircraft suffer from a high rate of unserviceability, particularly the Soviet- supplied equipment. This state of affairs is likely to continue until the country's internal security attains a level on which to rebuild Uganda's economy. All seven contribute to equipping and running the Air Force, itself formed from the Abu Dhabi Air Force, the almost defunct Dubai Police Air Wing, and the Union Air Force. The UAEAF is headquartered at Abu Dhabi, but the main base is at Dubai, where most major servicing is undertaken. As can be expected, the amalgamation has brought about a somewhat mixed inventory, mainly in the transport fleet, but the combat force has standardised on the Mirage 5 as its interceptor, with two squadrons maintained by seconded Pakistan Air Force personnel. Dassault-Breguet also look like supplying the UAE's future combat aircraft in the form of the Mirage 2000 at a cost of $2,500 million. Delivery is expected in 1986. To provide a training force for future UAEAF pilots, 14 PC-7s were delivered to Batin AB (formely Abu Dhabi Airport) in late 1981 and are now being joined by 16 Hawk T.63s. A further eight aircraft, designated T.61s, are going to Dubai. With the arrival of the Hawks, the ten Abu Dhabi Hunters have been with drawn and passed on to the Somali Air Corps, together with the four B-N Islanders. To replace the Islanders, Abu Dhabi has received CASA C.212s, plus two more C-130H Hercules delivered in 1981. The Buffaloes replaced the Caribous which were withdrawn in 1979. The present helicopter force comprises eight of ten SA.330 Pumas delivered, four AB.205As, some Alouette Ills, and 12 HOT- armed SA.342 Gazelles. Eight Super Pumas have been ordered, two armed with Exocet, and will be based at Maqatra. Dubai operates a small coin force of MB.326s, plus a transport element with a G.222 and an L-100-30. Six turboprop-powered SF.260TPs have been ordered to join the single Warrior version used for some years. More than 20 heli copters are in use including four recently- delivered Bell 214Bs and three BO105s.
