WORLD'S AIR FORCES zm r—; .... •. •.•£•! -T-: • &&w ".-.'"S^iF^-; «**«PSE? S3§ Venezuelan Air Force Bell 214ST are the 101st Abn Div, 82nd Abn Div, 24th Division, and 9th Infantry Division. tJH-60 procurement is expected to total 1,107. Simi larly, the Hughes AH-64A is to replace some of the AH-1 Huey Cobras in Army service. AH-64 procurement will run to some 446 machines, including the five prototypes, and the first production machines will be delivered in February 1984. The Stand Off Target Acquisi tion System (Sotas), to be fitted in Sikorsky EH-60Bs, has been dropped after a cost overrun on the avionics although a requirement for 77 EH-60s still exists. For liaison duties, the Army has 2,200 Bell OH-58A Kiowas, 720 of them being modified as day/night scout helicopters, with the first aircraft due for trials early in 1984. Also in the AOP role are some 400 Hughes OH-6A Cayuse light observation helicopters. Attack helicopter support is provided by almost 1,000 AH-1 Cobras, of which 490 have been converted to standard S model with TOW missiles. By 1984, the US Army will have an additional 516 fully upgunned AH-IS helicopters equipped with TOW anti-tank missiles. Medium-lift support is performed by 454 CH-47A/B/C Chinooks and 72 CH-54 Tarhe "Skycranes". A Chinook modernisation programme is upgrading 435 CH-47A/B/Cs to CH-47D standard. A large training force includes some 300 Hughes TH- 55A for primary helicopter training with fixed- wing flying performed on 250 T-4Is and 60 T-42s. Other types in service, include about 110 OV-1D and 36 RV-1D Mohawks, 149 Beech- craft U-21A/RU-21 Ute (Queen/King Air) liaison and electronic reconnaissance aircraft, and more than 100 Beech U-8 Seminole liaison aircraft. Another 12 C-12 Huron utility aircraft are being procured to add to the 86 already in service. Four UV-18A Twin Otters are in use with the Alaska National Guard. In Berlin, the Army has two Pilatus Turbo-Porters desig nated UV-20A Chincahuas; these aircraft are used to maintain a US military aviation presence in Berlin. Upper Volta Force Aerienne de Haute-Volta An ex- French Colony, the Upper Volta Republic was established in 1960, and the small air arm flies mainly second-hand ex-French Air Force equipment, with the exception of two BAe HS.748 transports. Older types in service are two C-47s, two Nord 262s, a single MH.1521M Broussard, two Cessna/Reims F.337 Super Skymasters, and an Aero Commander 500. One of the Nord 262s can be VIP configured. The two Alouette Ills have recently been joined by a single SA.365N Dauphin. Uruguay Fuerza Aerea Uruguaya The FAU is now understood to have taken delivery of the six Pucara close-support aircraft, and they are replacing nearly a dozen T-6Gs used by Grupo de Aviacion 1, Brigada Aerea 2 at Durazno. They will supplement the A-37s and AT-33s of GA-2 at the same base. Of the five CASA C.212s delivered last year, one is equipped for maritime patrol duties. The FAU is organised into two flying commands, Tactical and Training. The former has two Brigada Aerea: No 1 at Carrasco controls four Groups, No 3 with C.212s, Queen Air and C-47; No 4 with FH-227, F.27; No 5 with UH-1B/H and Bell 212; No 6 with EMB.110. The second Brigada operates the combat aircraft noted above. Training command is based at Pando, equipped with T-41s and T-34s. Aviacion Naval Uruguaya Operating from Capitan Curbelo airfield are nine S-2 Trackers used for SAR and ASW patrols with a single Super King Air Maritime Patrol delivered in 1980. New additions to the force include a Bell 222 and six ex-Chilean T-34s to supplement the three T-34Cs received in 1980. The squadron of Mirage IIIEs is to be supplemented by 16 General Dynamics F-16A Fighting Falcons and eight two-seat F-16B conversion trainers. Venezuela also looked a likely customer for the British Aerospace Hawk trainer. The Hawk was to replace the 24 Rock well T-2D Buckeye weapons trainers on a one for one basis, but this decision was reversed, and the Buckeyes will not be replaced at present. Instead, the F-86K squadron which was disbanded in 1981 will receive 15 ex- Canadian CF-5As and four CF-5B trainers to complement Esc.34, which operates a similar number of aircraft. However, by the middle of this year, this second batch of CF-5s had yet to be delivered. Latest acquisition is the Aeritalia G.222; two of these light transports were deliv ered in 1982. Servicio de Aviacion Naval Venezolana Venezuela's naval air arm took delivery of a de Havilland Canada Dash 7 in 1981. The aircraft operates from Caracas in the VIP, passenger, or cargo role as needs dictate, and is also used for off-shore surveillance and SAR work, although no special role equipment is fitted. ASW work is carried out by eight Grumman S-2E Trackers and a shipborne element equipped with 12 AB.212 ASW/ASVs, both types operated by Esc. Antisubmarino No 11 at Puerto Cabello AB. Other fixed-wing assets include three Casa 212s plus two more MR variants on order, and an HS.748. A small liaison and training force is made up of two Cessna 310s and a Beech King Air 90. Ejercito Venezolanas The Army is mainly helicopter orientated, operating three Bell UH-1H, three Bell 206, a couple of Bell 47 for training, and 12 Alouette Ills. Single examples of the Queen Air and King Air 200 are used for VIP work, a B-N Islander, four IAI Aravas, and two Swearingen Merlins handle light transport.
