Air Botswana was formed in August 1972 as the successor to Botswana Airways Corporation (itself established in 1969 to replace Botswana National Airways). The airline is wholly owned by the Botswana Development Corporation and operates scheduled passenger and cargo services from Gaborone to Johannesburg, Maun, Francistown, Selebi-Phikwe and Harare. Air Burundi, the state-owned national airline of Burundi, was originally formed in April 1971 as Societe de Transports Aeriens du Burundi (STAB), the present title being adopted in June 1975. Sched uled passenger services are operated from Bujumbura to Kigoma (Tanzania), Kigali (Rwanda) and Kalemie (Zaire), together with charter flights. Agricultural work is also undertaken. Scheduled inter-island passenger services began in July 1972 and now link Beef Island Airport, Tortola and Virgin Gorda with San Juan (Puerto Rico), St Thomas and St Croix (US Virgin Islands), St Kitts (Leeward Islands), St Maarten (Netherlands Antilles) and Antigua. Shareholding was reorganised in 1976 and is now in the hands of local businessmen, a charitable trust, and Air BVI employees. The airline was placed under trusteeship from 1972 to 1981 following the Collapse of its owner, Westgate California Corporation. Aircal is now 70 per cent owned by Aircal Investments. High frequency interstate one-class scheduled passehger services are operated between Orange County, Seattle/Tacoma, Ontario, San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, Portland, Sacramento, Reno/Lake Tahoe, Burbank, and Los Angeles. Air Canada, formerly Trans-Canada Airlines, was founded in 1937 as the nationally owned airline of Canada, with the stock held by Government-owned Canadian National Railways until February 28, 1978, when Air Canada became a Crown Corporation in its own right. The airline began operations between Vancouver and Seattle, and established airmail services between Montreal and Vancouver by October 1938 and transcontinental passenger services by April 1939. In May 1948 Air Canada took over the commercial operation of its wartime trans atlantic services to Britain.
