Air Florida, a wholly owned subsidiary of Air Florida System, began operations in September 1972 as an intrastate carrier. Following deregulation in 1978, the airline now operates scheduled passenger and cargo services to more than 50 destinations in Florida, the north eastern and south eastern United States, the Caribbean, Central America and Europe. The airline is also affiliated with feeder services within Florida and to points in the Bahamas under the name Air Florida Commuter, introduced in 1981. Air France was founded on August 30, 1933, when Societe Centrale pour l'Exploitation de Lignes Aeriennes (formed shortly before, on May 17, by the merger of Air Orient, Air Union, Compagnie Inter nationale de Navigation Aerienne and Societe Generale de Transport Aerien) purchased the assets of Compagnie Generale Aeropostale. After the Second World War air transport was nationalised and Societe Nationale Air France was set up on January 1, 1946, followed by Compagnie Nationale Air France on June 16, 1948, when the airline was incorporated by Act of Parliament. Today the state holds (99 • 38 per cent) of shares, the remainder lying in the hands of public and private interests. Air France's operations range from an intricate pattern of medium-haul routes throughout Europe and to North Africa and the Middle East, to a long-haul network extending to North and South America, the Caribbean Islands, Africa, Madagascar and the Indian Ocean, China, Tokyo, and other points in the Far East. Air France also operates the Postale de Nuit internal night mail services, which have achieved a very high standard of reliability and regularity using F.27-500s and Transalls. Some Euro pean routes are operated for Air France by Touraine Air Transport. Commercial supersonic services, inau gurated simultaneously with British Airways in January 1976, currently operate between Paris and New York. Air France has financial interests in Air Gabon, Air Guadeloupe, Air Djibouti, Air Inter, Air Madagascar, Air Mauritius, Cameroon Airlines, Middle East Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, and Tunis Air.
