PRIVATE FLIGHT Small is still beautiful in the USA LAKELAND Light and ultra/microlight designs continue to prolif erate in the United States. Among other types recently completed or flown are the Kelly r homebuilt and the Fisher FP-303 and Calder Wren ultralights, writes Howard Levy. Bud and Lil Rogers have completed the first Kelly D homebuilt from Dudley Kelly's plans. The tandem two-seat biplane has a two- spar wooden wing structure, with welded tubular-steel fuselage and tail section, and all-Dacron covering. The fixed main gear employs steel coil-spring shock absorbers. A 115 h.p. Lycoming 0-235 provides a 100 m.p.h. cruise speed and 45 m.p.h. stall, with a 900ft/min climb. Take-off Above Fisher FP-303. Below Kelly D homebuilt. Bottom Calder Wren mmm fflffitate. ft wdkankJ distance is 300ft, landing 250ft, service ceiling 10,000ft, and range with 24 US gallons of fuel is given as 270 miles with 20min reserve. Informa tion from Dudley R. Kelly, Route 4, Versailles, KY 40383. As well as the FP-101 and FP-202 Koala machines, Fisher Flying Products has introduced the FP-303 low- wing ultralight. Designers Mike Fisher and Wayne Ison are using computers to design their new aircraft (see Flight for April 21, page 1067). The FP-303, which first flew in late January, attended the Sun 'n Fun meeting at Lake land with 58hr of flight time on it. The machine has a strut-braced wing employing an I-beam main spar capped with solid plywood web, built up iin wood spars, with some geodetic construction between the front and rear spars. The aerofil is a modified USA 35B. The fuselage has an all- plywood forward section and double plywood flooring, with some geodetic construction in the fuselage aft of the seat to the tail. Covering is 1 • 6oz glider Dacron. The cockpit is 20in wide and 4ft long, and 7 quarts of fuel are carried in tne headrest. The main landing gear is similar to Pete Bowers' Fly Baby design, using rigid lin aluminium tubes with a lower strut. Wings can be folded alongside the fuselage in five minutes by pulling four T-handle pins. Ailerons are independent of the wing fold, so need not be discon nected. Enquiries to Fisher Flying Products, Inc, RT.2, Box 282, South Webster, OH 45682. The first single-seat ultra light Wren built from a kit has been constructed by retired machinist John Doerfler. Designed by Mark Calder, it was assembled in a corner of the Wren factory to provide a learning curve for construc tion manuals. The aircraft incorporates several modifications which are to be standard: 1ft higher tail, elimination of the "guppy" shaped body, a re designed engine mount for quieter operation, and removal of 1° dihedral for additional stability. Plans are priced at $100; a complete kit with a 43 h.p. Kawasaki 440A is $5,295. Construction time from kit is given as 250 to 500 hours. Schneider Trophy race applicants queue up LONDON ~ More than 40 applications have been received for entry to this month's Digital Schneider Trophy race, which is to be run over a course in the Solent (June 24). The Royal Aero Club Records, Racing, and Rally Association will accept as many as 60 aircraft; deadline for applica tions is June 11. Applications for entry have been received on behalf of two Quickie Q.2s, several twins (expected to include Peter Crispe's Cessna 337, a Baron, and Alan Dyer's Cessna 310), and a gaggle of 150-type singles. A Stampe and a Tiger Moth are expected. Where's the pork? LONDON ~ Sport aviators in the UK and member bodies of the Royal Aero Club (RAeC) have until the end of the month to submit entries in a "Pie in the Sky" contest. Individual prizes of £800, £450, and £250 are offered; winners of the corporate contest will receive £3,500, £1,500, and £600. The event is promoted by the RAeC and Meat Promotions Executive in aid of the Associ ations for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. Individuals are challenged to devise a novel/interesting/ unusual way to incorporate a pork pie in their area of sport ing aviation. Proof must be provided by submission of colour photographs. RAeC member bodies face the same challenge and are required to use their promotion to raise money for Asbah. Proof must be given in the form of Press cuttings, or audio/video tapes of radio/TV exposure. Plans must be submitted to Asbah 14 days before the plan ned date of execution; entries must be lodged with the RAeC by June 30.
