WORLD NEWS US Army resurrects HLH Boeing Vertol is refurbishing its XCH-62 after nine years in open storage. The US Army, Darpa, and Nasa have allocated $71 million to complete the heavylifter and for 115hr of flight-tests, to start in late 1987. Note the diminutive-looking Chinook to the left Soviet defence chiefs die MOSCOW ~ Marshal Sergei Sokolov has been appointed as successor to the USSR's Defence Minis ter, Dmitri Ustinov, who died on December 20. Sokolov was the senior of the three First Deputy Defence Ministers, having achieved that position in | 1967. At 73—the same age as Ustinov—his appointment is most probably a temporary L stopgap. Next in line are the r new Chief of Staff, Marshal Akhdomeneyev, and Marshal Petrov, who are both 67. Meanwhile, the USSR is |+ selecting a new Air Forces Commander following the death last month of I 70-year-old Chief Marshal of | Aviation Pavel Kutakhov, \ after 15 years in his post. Two strong contenders for this post are Marshal of Aviation ]pLIGHT International, 5 January 1985 A. N. Yefimov, currently First Deputy Commander of the Air Forces, and Chief Marshal A. N. Kuldunov. Both are in their mid-60s and both are twice Heroes of the Soviet Union. Marshal of Aviation G. P. Skorikov, the present Air Force Chief of Staff, is also a possible contender, and Minister of Civil Aviation B. P. Bugaev is seen as having an outside chance. Pentagon calls for "Star Wars" studies WASHINGTON D.C. ~ The United States Depart ment of Defence has awarded ten $1 million study contracts to US aerospace/defence industry teams to evaluate future technologies for the USA's Strategic Defence Initiative (SDI), more popu larly known as "Star Wars". Completion of the studies is expected by mid-1985 when several of the teams, perhaps as many as three, will be requested to extend their studies to Phase Two which will be the production of prototype hardware. The ten teams are: Hughes Aircraft, with Avco, Becntel National, GTE, and Pacific Sierra; Lockheed (California) with Honeywell, Raytheon, Contel, SRS Technology, and National Institute for Public Policy; Martin Marietta, with GA Technology and Logicon; McDonnell Douglas (Hunt ington Beach), with Aerojet, E-Systems, and R&D Associ ates; Rockwell International, with Titan Systems; Teledyne Brown Engineering; TRW; General Research; SAIL- Science Applications with Booz, Allen & Hamilton, plus Coleman Research; Sparta and W. J. Schafer, plus Nichols Research. Boeings sell Boeing now has its 14th customer, Transavia of Holland, for the 737-300, and has sold a 747-300 to Cathay Pacific.
