AIR TRANSPORT SF's power behind thethrone WINDSOR _ Saab-Fairchild has reshuffled some management personnel within its newly-established headquarters organisation, Saab-Fairchild Aircraft, which is now fully operational at Windsor, UK. In addition, president and CEO George Cudahy has announced the recruitment of George Field as vice-president engineering. A former DC-10 chief design engineer, Field joins SF from the Northrop Institute of Technology. Former director of engineering at Saab-Scania aircraft division, Erik Berstedt, joins the Saab- Fairchild team as director, aircraft design. The technical engineering director is Will iam East, who is promoted from his former post of deputy technical director for the SF.340 in Linkoping, Sweden, while John J. Faherty sets up his desk at Windsor HQ as vice- president business manage ment. Most recently Faherty, a Fairchild Industries vet eran, looked after operations and programme management atFI. Kurt Ahlborg, a former airliner maintenance spec ialist who served with Texas International and Pan Am before becoming responsible for SF.340 product support, is promoted vice-president pro duct support. In addition, Milton Mobaerg, who has been in charge of the 340's cert ification, takes the post of vice-president quality and certification. Neil Ciarfalia, president of the affiliated Saab-Fairchild Finance Corp before joining SF in 1983, becomes vice-president cust omer finance, and Robert Busey, former v-p business planning at Fairchild Air craft, takes the post of controller. The new Saab-Fairchild Aircraft organisation is now responsible for the complete SF.340 programme, including engineering, pro duction, marketing, and product support. Second 737-300 for Southwest Southwest Airlines of Dallas is due to accept its second 737-300 early this year. It took delivery of its first of the type in late November and is now operating the aircraft on its low-fare, one-class scheduled US services out of Houston. MARKET PLACE Nigeria Airways has accepted its four A310-200s. Two of the aircraft are already in Lagos, while the other two will depart for the Nigerian capital in mid-January. Nigeria Airways placed the order for four A310s in April 1981 but Government guaran tees on the aircraft were not agreed until 1984. The aircraft will be used on Nigeria's European services and on its regional services along the West Coast, seating 18 passengers in first class and 207 in economy. Nigeria Airways was the first African airline to sign for the A310. At year end 45 A310s had been delivered to 12 airlines. Spanish charter airline Hispania is to lease a Boeing 737 from Transavia of Holland from April 1985 to supplement its Caravelle fleet on its busy holiday routes between Spain and ten UK airports. The airline, which began operations in 1983 from Palma, has signed a co operation agreement with Transavia which is expected to acquire a 50 per cent stake in the carrier, providing commercial and technical support. Skywest/Sun Aire Lines has ordered five Metro Ills to provide extra capacity on Sun Aire's Californian routes. Two aircraft were due to be deliv ered at year end with one more to be accepted in March 1985. The last two aircraft will be received in September 1985. Skywest, which recently bought Sun Aire Lines of Palm Springs, provides freight and passenger services to 28 cities in seven states. CAAC of China has indicated that if British Aerospace was to cut the purchase price of the 146 by about $2 million each it would seriously consider buying the aircraft. BAe has been negotiating with the Chinese since July when it brought the 146 to China on a demonstration tour, but it declines to comment on how far nego tiations have progressed. It is adamant, however, that it is not about to offer a wholesale price to the Chinese. "We cannot afford to sell the 146 at less than the commercial price," a BAe spokesman says. People Express intends to sell one of its second-hand Boeing 747-200s to North west Orient Airlines for $38-5 million. The airline hoped to make the trans action at year end with deliv ery to Northwest during the first quarter of 1985. PE expects to obtain another 747-200 from Boeing's Used Aircraft Division to replace the aircraft it is selling. 8 NEWS SCAN Airbus Industrie's A310 is now certificated for cate gory 3B autoland. This allows approach and landing in 75m runway visual range and at zero decision height. The aircraft has been cleared for category 3A landings since September 1983. The auto matic flight control system (AFCS), the heart of the A310's autoland system, is produced by SFENA, Boden- seewerk, and Smiths Indus tries. Singapore Airlines is now offering non-stop services between London and Singa pore on three of its daily Boeing 747 services each week. Journey time is 12jhr. SIA has introduced a new 747 service between Singapore and Cairo, the carrier's first link with the African continent. El Al Israel Airlines is strengthening its position as a transatlantic freight carrier. It estimates it now carries some 15 per cent of total transatlantic freighter traffic. Currently it is flying 747Fs across the Atlantic six times a week carrying up to 40 tonnes of cargo each. Four of El Al's flights are routed from Tel Aviv through Amsterdam and then on to New York, or any other US destinations war ranted by despatchers. FLIGHT International, 5 January 1S8B
