WORLD AIRLINE DIRECTORY Air BC, a subsidiary of the Jim Pattison Group, is a Canadian commuter airline formed in 1980 through the merger of a number of small operators. Scheduled services are operated to numerous destinations in British Columbia with emphasis placed on routes connecting the lower mainland and Vancouver island cities. Floatplane operations out of bases at Campbell River and Port Hardy service many isolated logging and fishing communities along the coast of BC. Air Belgium (formerly Abelag Airways) was formed on May 3, 1979, to operate worldwide charter flights. Air Berlin was formed in 1978 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Oregon-based American agricultural company, Lelco, to operate passenger charter flights from Tegel Airport, Berlin, for German tour operators to points in the Mediterranean and North Africa. Airborne Express, the airline operating subsidiary of the Seattle, Washington-based Airborne Freight Corporation, was formed in April 1980 from a merger of Midwest Air Charter and the airline division of the freight forwarding company. Operations began in April 1980 and now cover an extensive network of overnight express small package services from the Airborne Air Park hub at Wilmington, Ohio, to 86 airports serving 160 cities and surrounding metro politan areas from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts. Air Botswana was formed in August 1972 as the successor to Botswana Airways Corporation (itself established in 1969 to replace Botswana National Airways). The airline is wholly owned by the Botswana Development Corporation and operates scheduled passenger and cargo services from Gaborone to Johannesburg, Lusaka and Harare as well as domestic services between Gaborone, Maun, Francistown and Selebi-Phikwe. Air Bridge, formed in 1972 as Air-Bridge Carriers (ABC), is a subsidiary of Field Aviation, itself a part of the Hunting Group of companies. Cargo charter services are operated to points in Europe, the Middle and Far East, and Africa. Air Bridge specialises in the carriage of express parcels and livestock. Air Burundi, the state-owned national airline of Burundi, was originally formed in April 1971 as Soci- ete de Transports Aeriens du Burundi (STAB), the present title being adopted in June 1975. Scheduled passenger services are operated from Bujumbura to Kigali (Rwanda) and Kalemie (Zaire), together with charter flights. Agricultural work is also undertaken. Scheduled inter-island passenger services began in July 1972 and now link Beef Island Airport, Tortola and Virgin Gorda with San Juan (Puerto Rico), St Thomas and St Croix (US Virgin Islands), St Kitts (Leeward Islands), St Maarten (Netherlands Antilles) and Antigua. Shareholding was re-organised in 1976 and is now in the hands of local businessmen, a charitable trust, and Air BVI employees. The airline was placed under trusteeship from 1972 to 1981 following the y collapse of its owner, Westgate California Corporation. Aircal is now 70 per cent owned by^ Aircal Investments. High frequency interstate one- class scheduled passenger services are operated between Orange County, Seattle/Tacoma, San Jose, -< San Francisco, Oakland, Portland, Sacramento, Reno/Lake Tahoe, Burbank, and Los Angeles.
