WORLD AIRLINE DIRECTORY The switch from DC-10-30s to Boeing 747-200Bs has proved very successful for Air New Zealand, and the type now operates all of the carrier's long-haul services Air New Zealand was founded in 1939 as Tasman Empire Airways, a joint British-Australian-New Zealand company (owned 20:30:50), formed to oper ate services linking New Zealand and Australia. In 1954 Britain withdrew, and in 1961 the New Zealand government assumed full ownership of the airline, which, on April 1, 1965, adopted the present title. In 1977 the Government decided to merge the two state corporations. From April 1, 1978, New Zealand National Airways Corporation and Air New Zealand were amalgamated under the latter name (NZNAC, formed in 1945 to operate scheduled internal services, began operations in 1947.). The airline oper ates an extensive network of scheduled passenger and cargo services to 24 main domestic points, while international routes link Auckland and Christchurch with Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane, Hobart, Port Moresby, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Nadi, Tonga, Noumea, Norfolk Island, Raratonga, Papeete, Honolulu, Los Angeles and London. Associated companies of Air New Zealand include Safe Air (100 per cent holding) and Instant Freeline Reservations (airline, hotel, car rental reservations system). Air Niger was formed in 1966 with assistance from UTA, and took over the air-taxi and charter oper ations of Societe Aero-Niger. Principal stockholder is now the Niger Government (94.47 per cent). The initial share holders were the government (60 per cent), Qantas (12 per cent), Ansett (16 per cent) and TAA (12 per cent). In 1976, the Government bought out the Qantas and TAA holdings and in 1981 acquired the Ansett shares to make the airline wholly Government-owned. Operations started on Novem ber 1, 1973, and scheduled passenger and cargo services now link the capital (Port Moresby) with 20 domestic points and Hong Kong, Manila, Singapore, Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns, Auckland, Jayapura (Indonesia), and Honiara (Solomon Islands). Morris, which solicited the help of former astronaut Eugene Cernan (subsequently the initial chairman of the board). First-class only services commenced on April 1, 1983 from St Louis, Air l's hub, to Newark, Washington D.C., Kansas City and Dallas/Fort Worth. McClain Airlines was acquired in 1984 but in October of the same year Air 1 filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the US bankruptcy law and ceased operations. Air Ontario, formerly known as Great Lakes Airlines until April 26, 1981, was founded as a Canadian charter company in January 1961. Sched uled services were inaugurated in 1967 and are pres ently operated throughout the provinces of Ontario and Quebec as well as between London (Ontario) and Cleveland (Ohio). Air Pac (Air Pacific Airlines) undertakes charter flights within the Aleutian islands and inaugurated scheduled service on February 1, 1982, between Dutch Harbor and Anchorage. Air Pacific, known until July 30, 1971 as Fiji Airways, was originally incorporated on April 13, 1947 under the name Katafanga Estates Limited. The Fiji Government is the principal shareholder with 92 per cent of the shares. Domestic and inter national services are operated to Honolulu, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Auckland, Noumea, Tonga, Western Samoa, Tahiti and other Pacific island nations. The airline is designated as the flag carrier of Panama and operates scheduled passenger and cargo services from Panama City to Los Angeles, Mexico City, Bogota, Guayaquil, Lima, Miami, New York and Caracas. Scheduled passenger services are oper ated from Papeete to Huahine, Raiatea, Bora Bora, Rangiroa, Takapoto, Manihi, Ua Huka, Tikehau, Apataki, Napuka, Tubuai, Mataiva, Kaukura, Faka- rava, Nuke Hiva, Maupiti, Hiva Oa, Rurutu, Moorea, Ua Pou, Anaa, Makemo, Hao and Gambiers. The airline . was nationalised in April 1975 and now operates an extensive network of scheduled passenger and cargo services to points in Europe, plus Montreal, New ,_ York, Caracas, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Salvador, Kinshasa, Brazzaville, Harare, Johannes burg, Luanda, Sal, Bissau, Sao Tome and Maputo. Domestic flights serve Oporto, Faro, Madeira and the Azores. Charter flights are also undertaken. Air Portugal's aviation-related activities include ESTA- Hotel Management, Tradingpor and Air Portugal Tours.
