WORLD AIRLINE DIRECTORY Atlantic Southeast Airlines (ASA) was incor porated in March 1979 and commenced scheduled commuter operations in June of that year. ASA currently operates a hub-and-spoke network from Atlanta, Georgia, serving some 19 cities in Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama, and on December 15, 1984, commenced a similar operation out of Memphis to cities in Alabama and Mississippi. Austin Airways was formed in 1934 and is Canada's oldest continuously operated airline. Austral Lineas Aereas (ALA) was formed in June 1971 by the merger of Austral Compania Argentina de Transportes Aereos, and Aerotransport.es Literal Argentino (ALA). The original Austral was formed in 1957 and began scheduled services in 1958. In 1966 Austral acquired a 30 per cent interest in ALA and the companies have operated integrated services from that time. ALA was formed in 1957 as an air-taxi company, and reorganised in 1958. Pan Am acquired a 22 per cent interest in 1965 in return for supplying DC-3s to ALA. Austral Lineas Aereas operates scheduled passenger and cargo services over a 27-point domestic network. Austrian Airlines (Osterreichische Luft- verkehrs) was formed in September 1957 by a merger of Air Austria and Austrian Airways, neither of which had started operating. The carrier is now owned 99 per cent by the Austrian Government. Scheduled passenger and cargo services are operated from Vienna, Graz, Linz, Klagenfurt and Salzburg to 39 cities in 34 countries in Eastern and Western Europe and the Middle East. Austrian Airtransport, Austrian Air Services, Touropa Austria, Inter- convention, Austrian Aircraft Corporation, and Airest are subsidiary companies. Austrian also under takes an extensive network of charter flights within Europe, the Mediterranean area and Africa through its subsidiary, Austrian Airtransport. Austrian Airtransport (Osterreichische Flugbetriebs) was formed in 1964 as a subsidiary of Austrian Airlines, which originally had a 40 per cent holding. This was increased to 80 per cent following a reorganisation of the company in September 1973. Charter and inclusive-tour services are operated using aircraft leased from Austrian Airlines. Aviaco (Aviacion y Comercio) was formed on February 18, 1948, by a group of Bilbao businessmen to operate all-cargo services with a fleet of Bristol Freighters. Scheduled passenger services were added in 1950, linking Bilbao with Madrid and Barcelona, followed by the first international route to Marseilles via Palma. Aviaco's present network includes services to Madrid, Valencia, Murcia, Malaga, Cordoba, Jerez, Badajoz, Vigo, La Coruna, Santander, Bilbao, San Sebastian, Pamplona, Zaragoza, Reus, Barcelona, Gerona, Seo de Urgel, Ibiza, Palma y Mahon, Tenerife, and Las Palmas. Inclusive-tour and charter flights form a large part of the airline's operations. Major shareholder is the Spanish Government agency INI with 90 per cent. Aerolineas de Guatemala- Aviogenex, the air transport division of the state- owned General Export Organisation, was formed in 1968 (as Genex Airlines) to operate passenger and cargo charter flights to points in Europe and the Mediterranean area in association with Yugotours, another General Export affiliate. Now wholly Government-owned, the new airline took over Out Island Airways and Flamingo Airlines. Bahamasair began operations in June 1973, and scheduled passenger and cargo services now link Nassau with Newark, Atlanta, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Turks and Caicos Islands, and Freeport, and an additional 20 points in the Family Islands. Balkan Bulgarian Airlines, known until 1968 as TABSO, started services in July 1947 as a joint Bulgarian-Soviet company, but became a fully Bulgarian operation in 1954. The airline operates scheduled passenger and cargo services to 44 points in Europe, Asia and Africa, together with an eight- point domestic network.
