Varig subsequently absorbed several other airlines, including the domestic operator Aero Geral (1951), the Real consortium (1961), and Panair do Brasil's equipment and international routes in 1965. Capital majority is held by the foundation of employ ees and executives. An extensive network of routes is operated throughout South and Central America, and to the USA, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Major shareholders are the Sao Paulo City Government and the VASP Employees Foundation. The airline operates 54,419km of domestic routes from Manaus in the north to Porto Alegre in the south, and connects all but one of the state capitals to Brasilia. High-frequency services are operated in pool with Varig and Cruzeiro over the Rio-Sao Paulo and Rio-Belo Horizonte-Brazilia routes—the "Ponte Aerea" (Air Bridge). Viasa—Venezuelan Internacional Airways (Venezolana Internacional de Aviacion) was formed in 1961 to take over the international routes operated by Avensa and LAV, which now concentrate on domestic services. The carrier is wholly-owned by the Venezuelan Government. Scheduled passenger services are operated from Caracas and Maracaibo across the Atlantic to Las Palmas, Lisbon, Madrid, Milan, Rome, Paris, Frankfurt, London, and Amsterdam. Viasa also operates to Miami, Washing ton, New York, Mexico City, San Jose, Panama City, Bogota, Cali, Quito, Lima, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Curacao, Santo Domingo, San Juan, Port of Spain, and Barbados. Virgin Atlantic Airways commenced low-fare scheduled passenger services between London (Gatwick) and New York (Newark) on June 22, 1984, followed by Gatwick-Maastricht services on Novem ber 15 of the same year. Originally formed as British Atlantic Airways in June 1982, the company was acquired by the Virgin Record Group and adopted its present title. Wardair Canada (1975) dates back to 1946, when Maxwell W. Ward started bush operations from Yellowknife as the Polaris Charter Co with a single D.H. Fox Moth, flying charters in support of the rapidly developing mining industry in the Northwest Territories. Wardair was formed in 1953 to continue this work, and started operations using an Otter. The name Wardair Canada was adopted in 1962 and oper ating authority amended to include international charter operations. The airline went public in 1967 and the major shareholder is Maxwell W. Ward with 73 per cent of the stock. On January 1, 1976, the name change to Wardair Canada (1975) was effected, with Wardair International becoming a parent company to the airline operations as well as to wholly owned subsidiaries International Vacations, Wardair (UK), Wardair Hawaii, Wardair Jamaica, Wardair Equipment and Redrock Reinsurance. Western Air Lines (WAL) claims to be the oldest US airline, having been founded in 1925 as Western Air Express. The present name was adopted in March 1941. WAL operates scheduled passenger and cargo services to 67 cities in the USA including Alaska and Hawaii; Mexico City, Guadalajara, Ixtapa/ Zihuatanejo, Matzatlan, Puerto Vallarta, and Acapulco in Mexico; and Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary in Canada.
