New event marks 1985 racing season LONDON The 1985 British air-racing season will comprise eight National Air Races. Of these, one is completely new and another is international. The end-of-season King's Cup comprises three legs. All races carry points toward the British Air Racing Champion ships (sponsored by Digital Equipment) and are qualify ing events for the King's Cup. Starting off the season is the established London- Londonderry "Amelia Earhart" race, which this year will start from Hatfield. This is followed by the Digital Schneider Trophy Race around the Solent starting at Bembridge, Isle of Wight. The Royal Aero Club tells Flight that 30 of the available 60 entries have been applied for. A completely new event this year is the City Livery Trophy, scheduled to take place at Humberside Airport in early July. A new course has been selected for the Kent Messenger race at Rochester (Kent), following the accident involving two competitors during the 1984 event. The Inter World Trade Centre air race is to be held in late August and will be inter national; entrants will fly from Biggin Hill to Rotter dam, returning on the next day. Each leg will carry cham pionship points and will qual ify toward the King's Cup. Judging will be based upon total overall performance, with aircraft re-handicapped in Rotterdam on the results of the outward leg. This year there will be no Steward's Cup, the recent precursor to the King's Cup. Instead the season's premier event will be conducted in three parts: an out-and-return race from Shoreham, a small circuit race, and a longer race as yet to be detailed. 1985 British Air-racing events June 8 Amelia Earhart Race: London-Foyle Bridge, FLIGHT International, 13 April 1985 Toyota sponsors Lecomber Pitts Brian Lecomber has been sponsored by Toyota for the 1985 airshow season.
