1 INDUSTRY Embraer outlines strategy BRASILIA After three years in which turnover has remained steady at around $160 million-$170 million, Embraer of Brazil is preparing for a big jump in sales. "The Brasilia alone, which we are just beginning to produce, should provide us with an income next year equivalent to our total turn over this year," says commer cial director Ozilio da Silva. In all, he expects Embraer's 1986 turnover to reach $400 million. Da Silva believes that Embraer is beginning a new cycle. "We had to keep a low profile for several years, so that we could begin produc tion of the Tucano and the Brasilia, as well as start the AMX project." This strategy, which seemed very ambitious when it was started in the late 1970s, has proved correct. "If we hadn't taken this daring and perhaps risky step, we would be competing abroad today with only the Bandei- rante and, occasionally, with the Ipanema." As it is, the new types have altered Embraer's whole strategy. Embraer will be offering the Brasilia (52 sold so far) and the Tucano trainer to the USA, Europe, and the Middle East. The Bandei- rante, from now on, will be aimed at Africa and Asia. For the second half of the 1990s Embraer has four options. The first is to start production with Aeritalia and Aermacchi of the AMX jet fighter. Another, considered "probable" by da Silva, is a stretched version of the 30-seat Brasilia so that it can take 40 passengers. "We are only waiting to make sure that there is sufficient market demand." Meanwhile, Embraer has launched the 18/20-seat corporate version of the Brasilia, and is consid ering maritime patrol and military transport versions. The other two options—for a pressurised Bandeirante (18 passengers) and another seven/eight-passenger execu tive type based on the Xingu but faster and longer-range— are as yet less defined. Brazil's air force minister, Brigadier Octavio Moreira Lima, wants Brazil to develop a supersonic fighter in con junction with other countries, though da Silva has reserva tions about the $1,500 million investment required. To undertake its new projects, Embraer is increasing its capital from Crsl92,900 million (£16-5 million) to £60-6 million in three stages over the next three years. At the moment the situation is irregular: the Federal Government, through the air force ministry, has only 5 • 5 per cent of the total share capital, though it controls all the voting shares. This is technically illegal, infringing the regulations established three years ago. All the new shares will be in the hands of the air force ministry. Garrett employees fired PHOENIX Eleven employees at Garrett AirResearch Manufacturing found accepting bribes for subcontracts have been fired. The Federal Bureau of Investigation says that the 11 were members of Air- Research's purchasing department. The investigation was part of a continuing effort by the US Government to crack down on corruption in the US aerospace industry. AirResearch employs a third of Garrett's workforce. Product lines include mechanical power systems, electronics, environmental and energy systems, and heat transfer and cryogenic equip ment. The industrial group provides rapid transit and electrical power. Same shape, § 90 FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL, 4 January 1986
