WORLD AIRLINE DIRECTORY Ghana Airways Corporation was formed in July 1958 by the Ghana Government to take over the Ghana operations of the former West African Airways Corporation. International routes now link Accra with Rome, Dusseldorf and London. West coast DC-9 services link Accra with Lagos, Abidjan, Monrovia, Freetown, Conakry, Banjul, Dakar, Lome, and Cotonou, and extensions are planned to Douala, Libreville, and Luanda. The carrier currently operates charter services throughout the western USA and British Columbia for Reno and Lake Tahoe area casinos. Granlandsfly A/S (Greenlandair) was established in November 1960, and holds the sole concession to operate domestic scheduled services together with international and domestic charters. Scheduled passenger and cargo services link the capital Godthab with Mestersvig, Scoresbysund, Angmagssalik, Sondre Stromfjord, Frederikshab, Groennedal, Narssaq, Julianehab, Nanortalik, Sukkertoppen, Holsteinborg, Egedesminde, Godhavn, Umanaq, Upernavik, Jakobshavn, Christians hab, Qaanak, Thule, Reykjavik (Iceland), and Frobisher Bay (Canada). Besides scheduled traffic, Green landair uses helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft for special operations such as offshore supply flights, ice reconnaissance, heavy-lift, survey and exploration services, and supply flights to DEW-line stations for the USAF in Greenland and eastern Canada. Gulf Air operates a network of scheduled passenger and cargo services linking Bahrain with Abu Dhabi, Amman, Baghdad, Beirut, Bangkok, Bombay, Cairo, Colombo, Dacca, Dhahran, Delhi, Doha, Hong Kong, Jeddah, Karachi, Khartoum, Kuwait, Larnaca, London, Muscat, Manila, Paris, Ras Al Khaimah, Salalah, Sanaa, Sharjah, Shiraz, Teheran, Tunis, and Athens. Charter work is also undertaken. Bahrain Airport Services, Gulf Helicopters Ltd, Gulf Hotels, Abu Dhabi Airport Services, and Doha Airport Services are subsidiary companies of Gulf Air. The airline was formed in March 1950. Since 1974 all the shares in the carrier have been held by the govern ments of the Gulf States of Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. However, of the seven UAE states, only Abu Dhabi has a financial stake in the airline, and only Sharjah recognises Gulf Air as its official carrier. Gulf Air Inc., a US supplemental air carrier formed in 1979, provides charter services throughout the USA, Mexico, Bahamas, Bermuda, Caribbean and Central and South America. The airline originally became recognised for its role in oil-support, but in recent years activities have expanded to holiday charters, as well as the transportation of sport teams, bands, students and military personnel. In July 1955 the Government bought out BGA and in September 1963 the name was changed to Guyana Airways. A network of scheduled services links Georgetown with 24 points in Guyana, and Miami, New York, Port of Spain, and Barbados. Cargo flights are operated to Miami, the Caribbean, and Brazil, and charter work is also undertaken. British Airways provides manage ment assistance under contract. Hang Khong Vietnam, previously known as the General Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam — CAAV, is the state airline of Vietnam. Scheduled passenger services are operated from Gialem Airport, Hanoi, to Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), Vientiane, Phnom-Penh, and Bangkok. An extensive domestic network is operated from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The exact status of the fleet is uncertain. Head Office: Gialem Airport, Hanoi, Vietnam. The company was formed in July 1972 as Hapag-Lloyd Flugzeug GmbH, and operations began in 1973. The company received federal authority to merge with Bavaria-Germanair in January 1979. The mainland Air Cargo Division (Hawaiian Air Cargo) operated Electra freighters on commercial (Emery and Auto Air) and military (Logair) contracts from Lewis B, Wilson Airport, Macon, Georgia, until September 1980, when the division was sold to Zantop. Hawaiian also operates charters which include services linking Hawaii with San Francisco and Vancouver. The carrier was founded in 1929 as Inter-Island Airways and the present title was adopted in 1941. Major stockholder with 45 per cent is John H. HeavyLift Cargo Airlines, a specialist carrier of outsize cargoes, was formed on October 31, 1978, as a joint company venture owned by Cunard Steamship/Trafalgar House (66.6 per cent) and Eurolatin Aviation (33.3 per cent). Worldwide ad hoc charters began in March 1980, following civil certifi cation of the ex-military Belfast freighters.
