LETTERS Sympathetic traveller SIR—I read the letter from Wilhelm Pflug (Flight, November 1) with some sympathy. I am a reasonably regular long-haul economy passenger and, following British Airways' decision to blank-off the overwing exits of their 747s, I have accumu lated many thousands of miles of business travel in foreign flag aircraft. I have, therefore, enjoyed many new and varied styles of in-flight service and, while I recognise my humble station as an economy passenger, I remain amazed by the level of service offered by both Pan Am and TWA. Although their fares are not noticeably cheaper than those of other airlines, their unfortunate passengers have to pay $3 to borrow shoddy (largely in effective) headsets for the in-flight movie. A small beer costs $2, and spirits $3—in fact, the most useful in-flight accessory is a well stuffed wallet. Surprisingly, the meals are free of charge and quite palatable, although wine, if one is prepared to buy some, is served after the meal has been consumed, which is infuri ating. I recently had to fly San Francisco to London by British Airways. It was a very pleasant flight, and I am now rationalising the emergency exit problem. I mean, pas senger aircraft hardly ever catch fire or ditch, do they? PETER INGHAM Old Well Lodge Harbury Lane Ufton Leamington Spa Warwickshire CU33 9NZ The Grand old days Dear Uncle Roger—May I refer to your item on the Ilya Muromets (Flight, October 4), where you state that it was the world's first four-engined aircraft? The Ilya Muromets was built after Igor Sikorsky dismantled his Grand. He built the Grand with two Argus engines, and on finding that it was underpowered he added two more engines. The aeroplane was then renamed Russkii vityaz and made its first flight (with four engines, that is) on July 23, 1913 (August 5 on our calendar). The engine which put an end to the Russkii vityaz was a French 100 h.p. Gnome Monosoupape, which broke away from Mr A. M. Gaber- Vlynskii's Meller-II biplane and fell on Sikorsky's machine. Mr Gaber-Vlynskii managed to land his aeroplane without injury. This hap pened in August 1913, during the military aircraft com petition at St Petersburg. Incidentally, the Russkii vit yaz was not competing—the competition was for single- engined aircraft only. W. H. SCHOENMAKER P.O.
