AIR TRANSPORT TMA is back Sixteen months after suspending operations between the UK and the Middle East, Beirut-based cargo carrier Trans Mediterranean Airways has resumed regular freight flights to London. It flies the same seven Boeing 707-320Cs which it used to operate before, and they have been kept at Beirut in the interim period. A320 line speeds up TOULOUSE Before the year's end, Aero spatiale's plant in Saint Nazaire will have assembled the tenth A320 front fuselage section, while the central and rear fuselage sections of the 11th aircraft are being completed at the MBB plant in Hamburg. Similarly, the British Aerospace plant at Filton will deliver the eighth wing, and the Construcciones Aeronauticas S.A. (Casa) works at Getafe, near Madrid, will have started assembly on the tail unit of the fifth aircraft. A320No. 21 will be the first to be powered by the Inter national Aero engines V.2500, which makes its entry into the engine market on the A320. Production will reach the rate of four units per month by early 1989, and eight aircraft a month by the middle of 1990, compared with the present 2 • 5 aircraft a month. Manufacturing of sections for aircraft up to No. 60, due out of the assembly line by 1989, has already begun, and supplies are being provided for up to the first 140 aircraft. About 400 Airbus A320s will have been ordered firm and on options by the time the 150-seat aircraft makes its maiden flight, says Airbus Industrie chairman Jean Pierson. Airbus Industrie is already planning a stretched version of the A320 to carry 180 to 200 passengers, most probably using IAE Superfan engines as well as GE/Snecma CFM56-5S2 engines. NEWS SCAN Hindustan Aeronautics has started manufacturing the Dornier Do.228 in India under licence from Dornier in West Germany. The aircraft's engine is similarly to be made under licence from Garrett of the USA. Pan Am has started one-stop, same-aeroplane flights from New York to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, via Frankfurt. It will be the only US flag carrier linking the USA and Saudi Arabia direct with this twice- weekly service. Talks between the UK and Japan were adjourned on December 5 because of "a lack of agreement on capacity for air service between the two nations. However, British Caledonian's (BCal) basic right to operate between the two countries, in addition to British Airways (BA) and Japan Air Lines (JAL), was confirmed, and agreement was reached on the principle that another Japanese carrier, possibly All Nippon Airways (ANA), should be allowed to fly the route, according to a UK Department of Transport spokesman. BCal wanted to start direct services over Siberia to Japan in the Spring, but further talks are not due to commence until January, with both the Japanese and the Soviets to reach agreement on the new service. Until a capacity agreement and Soviet over flying rights are established, BCal and ANA cannot fly the service. Mid Pacific Air is trying to attract more passengers by offering a whale watching tour out of Honolulu. km ISRAEL AIRCRAFT INDUSTRIES LTD Aircraft Manufacturing Israel Aircraft Industries' Aircraft Manufacturing Division has unique facilities to manufacture the Lavi, Astra and Westwind.
