space Fifteen years after its first business jet was delivered, Cessna announced the Cita tion V. Following six years of work, the project received the go-ahead on April 15. The first aircraft flew on August 18, and had accumulated almost 50hr before visiting New Orleans for just one day. The Citation V has a longer fuselage than the S/II which it replaces, and is powered by two 2,9001b-thrust Pratt & Whitney JT15D-5As (which already drive the T-47 Cita tion in US military service). Certification is planned for November 1988, with deliv eries in early 1989. Price for the first 35 aircraft is given as $3,795,000 at current values. Cessna surveyed 1,300 Cita tion owners, asking what they liked and which improve ments or future options they would like to see. The most popular attributes were given as low-cost operation and short take-off distance, and operators asked for more cabin space, higher speed, a better climb rate, and increased speed at altitude. Cessna has introduced $400,000 worth of options as standard on the Citation V, including thrust reversers, an integrated Sperry autopilot, a flight guidance system (including Efis), Global GNS-X nav management, FLIGHT © Reed Business Publishing 1987 weather radar, engine synchronisers, a 64ft3 oxygen system, and radio altimeters. The latest Citation has a 20in insert aft of the cabin door, providing for a seventh window on each side. Slight beefing-up of the wing takes account of the higher pay- loads possible with the larger aircraft. The wing is basically that used on the S/II., The redesigned tailplane has 15 per cent greater span to provide lower take-off rota tion forces and to optimise longitudinal handling quali ties. The fuselage is designed for two pairs of facing seats on each side.
