WORLD'S AIR FORCES force, which is undergoing a weapons system modernisation programme. The Atlantics are controlled operationally by the Navy. Aviazione per; la Marina Militare Italiana The Italian Navy's air component is entirely helicopter equipped, although the service continues to lobby the Government in an attempt to change the law forbidding it to oper ate fixed-wing aircraft. The new carrier, Giuseppe Garibaldi, is fitted with a ski-jump but has no Vstol aircraft, and the Navy's require ment for either Sea Harriers or AV-8Bs remains unfulfilled. The MMI is due to receive the Anglo-Italian EH.101 as a replacement for its Agusta-built Sea Kings. Italian Naval pilots are trained by the Italian Air Force or in the USA by the US Navy, followed by a conversion and tactical training course in Italy. Aviazione Leggera Del'Esercito (ALE) The Army's helicopter force is considerable, with some 400 machines in the liaison, AOP, and anti-tank roles. Deliveries of the A.129 attack helicopter are beginning against initial orders for 60, while the AB.412 has also entered Army service. A.109EOAs are displacing fixed-wing SM. 1019s in the front line roles. The SM.1019s will be relegated to training and support duties, in turn allowing the ageing O-l Bird Dogs to be progressively retired. By October 1987 support had shifted away from an indige nous FSX design, and a modified, Japanese- built variant of the F-16, known as the SX-3, was selected to fulfil the 130-aircraft require ment. A five-to-six-year retrofit programme for F-4EJ Phantoms, including AN/APG-66 radar, an advanced fire-control system, new missiles, and structural modifications, began in 1987. Up to 100 may ultimately be upgraded for service into the late 1990s, and 17 of the remainder will be converted to the reconnaissance role.
