To enhance the Army's large force of approximately 3,500 UH-1 Iroquois, the delivery of UH-60A Blackhawks continues, equipping major units in the USA, Europe, and Korea. Total Blackhawk procurement is expected to reach 1,107 machines. The AH-64A Apache being delivered to the Army will supplement and enhance the present fleet of AH-1 Cobras. AH-64A procurement is programmed to reach 675 aircraft. For liaison and scout duties the Army has a large fleet of OH-58A/C Kiowas, of which 576 are due to be modified to OH-58D AHIP scout helicopters. The first aircraft were completed in 1986. Also in the scout role are OH-6A Cayuse observation helicopters. Attack helicopter support is provided by AH-1 Cobras, of which most have been converted to AH-1S standard with TOW missiles. Medium-lift support is provided by CH-47C/D Chinooks and CH-54s. A Chinook modernisation programme is upgrading CH-47A/Bs to CH-47D standard. The US Army's primary flight training force is supported by TH-55As for helicopter pilot training. Fixed-wing flight training is performed on Cessna T-41Bs and Beech T-42s. Other types in service include OV-1D and RV-1D Mohawks, C12/U-21/RU-21 liaison and electronic reconnaissance aircraft, and U-8 Seminole liaison aircraft. Shorts 330s support the Pacific Missile Ranges, while UV-18A Twin Otters are used by the Alaska National Guard. Additionally, UV-20A Chincahua (Turbo- Porters) are based in Berlin. The "Golden Knights" parachute demonstration team uses F-27 Friendships. The Army's aircraft fleet modernisation programme is expected to continue well into the future, and 231 MV-22A Osprey tilt-rotor transports are to be acquired in the early 1990s. Research into the development of a light, highly versatile, multirole helicopter, known as the Light Helicopter Experimental (LHX), is the Army's latest project. The LHX will utilise the latest technological advances in design, struc ture, and electronics, with the goal of replacing the older light helicopters. The Pucaras replaced AT-6G Texans, although a few are retained for reconnaissance duties with Grupo de Aviacion 1, Brigada Aerea 2, at Durazno, supplementing the A-37Bs and T-33As of GA-2 at the same base. The FAU has two flying commands, Tactical and Training. The former has two Brigada Aereas: BA-1 at Carrasco has four Groups, GA-3 with CASA 212 Aviocars, plus C-47 Dakotas and Queen- airs; GA-4 with FH.227s and F.27s; GA-5 with Iroquois and Bell 212s; and GA-6 with EMB-110 Bandeirantes. The second Brigada operates the combat types noted above. Train ing Command is based at Pando and operates T-41s and T-34As. Aviacion Naval Uruguaya All Navy aircraft are operated from Base Aeronaval Capitan Curbelo, at Laguna la Sauce, including S-2 Trackers in the ASW and SAR roles, a single maritime patrol configured Super King Air 200, and a Bell 222 for SAR duties. Pilots are trained on Super Cubs, T-6s, T-28 Trojans, T-34A/B Mentors and T-34C Turbo-Mentors. An aviation element is equipped with an Alouette III and two BK.117s, delivered in 1983 and 1985 respectively. Tasks include liaison and VIP transport. Venezuela Fuerza Aerea Venezolanas The FAV is the only air arm in South America to operate the F-16, having received 24 between 1983 and 1985 to supplement its front-line Mirage Ills, Mirage Vs, CF-5s and Canberras. Deliveries of 24 IA-58 Pucara Coin aircraft ordered in September 1983 have never taken place, and similarly a second batch of 19 CF-5s has failed to materialise. A replacement for the T-2D Buckeye advanced trainer has not yet been selected, but 30 EMB-312 Tucanos ordered in 1986, to replace the ageing T-34A Mentors, are now in service. The strength of the Mirage III fleet was significantly reduced in August 1986 when three aircraft were lost in a collision. Replacement aircraft are still being sought. The FAV is organised into three commands, Combat, Training and Transport, these being subdivided into Groups according to role, each Group tending to operate similar types of aircraft. Aviacion de la Marina Venezolana The Naval air arm is tasked with shipborne and shorebased ASW, the latter being allocated to Esc.AS-01's S-2 Trackers at Puerto Callebo, while Esc.AS-03 uses AB.212ASWs which are also based at Puerto Callebo when not embarked on the "Sucre" class frigates.
