Shareholding was reorganised in 1976 and is now in the hands of local businessmen, a charitable trust, and AIR BVI employees. Major shareholders are Air Caledonie (the domestic carrier) with 33 per cent, Sofrana Unilines with 31 per cent, and the Leroux Group with 16 per cent. History: Air Caledonie began operations in September 1983. Fleet: one Caravelle 10B. Through this investment the company will further extend its "Air Canada Connector" feeder network. Currently the participants in this operation are Air Nova (Air Canada purchased 49 per cent interest in 1986), Air BC (acquired in 1987), Air Ontario (formed by the merger of Austin Airways and Air Ontario, in which the company has 75 per cent ownership), and Commuter Express. The airline's bilateral difficulties have now been resolved, ensuring continuation of its services to the UK and Singapore. Routes: Air Canada operates an extensive network of scheduled passenger and cargo services within Canada, together with international routes to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Tampa, Miami, New York and Boston in the USA; Freeport, Nassau, Havana, Montego Bay, Kingston, Bermuda, Antigua, St Lucia, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Barbados, Haiti, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, and Port of Spain in the Caribbean; London, Manchester, Prestwick, Paris, Geneva, Zurich, Diisseldorf, Munich, and Frankfurt in Europe. Scheduled services to Bombay and Singapore started in January 1985. Service to Vienna recommen ced on April 26, 1987, after a ten-year gap. All cargo flights operate to Brussels and Shannon. Charter flights are also undertaken. Tours organiser Touram is a subsidiary. History: The airline was founded in 1937 as Trans- Canada Airlines, with the stock held by Government- owned Canadian National Railways until February 1987, when Air Canada became a Crown Corporation in its own right. The airline began operations between Vancouver and Seattle in 1938 and had established transcontinental passenger services by April 1939. The name of the airline was changed by Act of Parliament from Trans-Canada Airlines to Air-Canada in 1965.
