5-day emer holiday, but the job was agreed subject to samples of seats and frames being available on the morning of Day 6 and the aircraft being at a London airport over two days for the installation. Customs at Heath row responded and the samples reached Polyvoltac at 5.0 p.m. with nine days to go. There were three different types of passenger chair and a variety of cabin attendant seats. By rapid redesign the seat- bottoms of all the 420 passenger seats were standardised. Proto types had been made and checked on Day 5 and by midnight all was ready for pro duction to start in the morning. The customer was a leasing firm based in Europe and it had no cushion-cover material. Polyvoltac discovered a firm, A 747's 1 At 5.30 p.m. one Friday Poly voltac UK was closing down for the weekend when a call came from its Canadian parent com pany: "Could you carry out a complete refit of 440 passenger, crew, and cabin attendant seats in a Boeing 747 in 14 days?" The aircraft had been refused entry to the USA for failing to meet the new fireblocker safety regulations introduced by the US Federal Aviation Adminis tration. With a European bank holi day weekend starting the com pany had two weeks in which to complete the job—fabricating the foam cushions, providing the covers, and fitting the cush ions to the seats in the aircraft. A busy planning weekend was not helped by the customer's absence over the Blades protected Rotor blades of all Bell 205 heli copters of the multinational force and observers (MFO) in the Sinai desert have been coated with special erosion guard materials developed by Israel Aircraft Industries. IAI's Jerusalem-based heli copter maintenance centre, Mata, is maintaining US and Canadian Bell 205 squadrons flying in the buffer zone in the Sinai desert, where the MFO is stationed. The sand erosion of main-rotor-blade leading edges has become a major problem. Mata submitted a proposal to the MFO, and shortly after wards began to treat the rotors of MFO helicopters that flew in for maintenance. The erosion guard developed by Mata is a layer of sprayed elastometric protective coating. The material has good adhesion to the base metal of the blade and a high resistance to sand erosion. The erosion guard has been used by the Israeli Air Force and proved effective. MD500 rotor blades flew for more than 600 hours without damage, and UH-1 tail rotors treated with the material flew for more than 400 hours without damage. Mata is winning increasing amounts of overseas work. The company is currently upgrading US Air Force Sikorsky CH-53 clutches (Flight, July 9) and is bidding for similar work from the West German Air Force. Hi-tech st A limited number of British Army helicopters may be fitted with an auxiliary systems plat form (ASP) from BGH Indus tries. The ASP is a retractable plat form which can be used to mount machine guns, and other weapons systems, or search- and-rescue equipment. BGH claims that the ASP makes entering and leaving a An agreement has been signed between Fokker and IPTN for the co-production of Fokker 100 components in Indonesia. Over a 10-year period IPTN will produce milled wing and tail components. The agreement signals a gency British Replian at Ayr in Scot land, with enough stocks to provide a four-colour scheme. This was expressed overnight; patterns were cut and pro duction started on Day 6. By working extended shifts from 8.0 a.m. to 11.0 p.m., including the weekend, the staff com pleted production early on Day 14, with one day to go. That morning Polyvoltac heard that the 747 was at Manchester, not London, and would not be available for installation work on completion day since it was required for flight training. Staff took the 440 cushions to Manchester and fitted them through the night. As the last Polyvoltac UK worker left the 747 at 8.0 a.m. the customer's crew boarded for flight training. p offered helicopter (particularly one fitted with a high skid under carriage) easier for heavily laden troops. The platform hinges at the inboard edge and retracts upwards into a shallow low-drag blister. Consideration is being given to the installation of a machine gun on the platform, with ammunition being fed from the cabin. continuation of industrial co operation accords between the two countries which have been in existence for over 30 years, says Fokker. The company has sold around 100 F.27s and F.28s mainly to Indonesian Airways and the Government. I f [ Cofsar Kiecttonk"! acpomtr, William Fraser managing dire*: ten.
