BAe sells 700th 125 An order for three BAe 125-800s from US-based Wil liams Companies has taken the total of BAe 125 sales through the 700 barrier. The 125 holds the distinction of selling in greater numbers than any other British-made civil jet aircraft. It operates in 40 countries world wide, and has achieved export sales amounting to more than £1-5 billion at 1988 values. The BAe 125-800, the latest version of the business jet, features uprated engines (Garrett TFE731-5 turbofans), a redesigned wing, and a reshaped rear fuselage. These features combine to give the -800 a 3,000-mile VFR range. The largest single market for the BAe 125 has proved to be North America, with more than 60 per cent of the aircraft's sales. BAe 125-800s are deliv ered in a "green" state to the Arkansas Modifications Centre (which BAe recently bought— Flight, July 16 page 18), where they are prepared for delivery to customers. British Aerospace teamed with Honevwell and The BAe 125-800 has been selected by the USAF for use as a flight inspection aircraft. First deliveries of the six aircraft ordered will begin in spring 1989 The BAe 125s will replace Lockheed C-140 Jetstars and T-38 Sabreliners Rockwell-Collins to develop the full digital "glass cockpit" and avionics systems of the 125-800. The 125-800 series was recently successful in being selected by the United States Air Force for use as a flight inspection aircraft Flight, April 23, page 10). BAe will act as contractor to the chosen prime contractor, LTV Missiles and Electronics Group's Sierra Research Division. BAe has a 50 per cent share in the $100 million contract for six aircraft. When the first aircraft is delivered to Sierra's facility in Buffalo, New York, in the spring of 1989, the process of installation of flight inspection consoles will begin. The role will entail the analysis of USAF air navigation aids and of airport landing facilities, to ensure that equipment conforms to US and inter national standards. British Aerospace, in partner ship with Rockwell Inter national, is competing for the US contract for a Tanker, Transport, Training System (TTTS). The contract, which could be worth as much as $1 • 5 billion, is expected to include as many as 200 aircraft as part of an integrated training system package, similar to the T-45 Training System which includes the T-45A Goshawk. The formal request for proposals will be issued in January 1989, according to BAe and a contract award will be made in mid-1989. BAe admits that, although the 125-800 is popular with the USAF, the competition will be hard-fought, and its entry will be the most expensive of the proposed aircraft.
