Market expectations are driving manufacturers to install Efis on all types (above British Aerospace A TP) Airbus's electronic centralised aircraft monitor (Ecam). This CRT is typically placed under or to the right of the display of primary engine parameters. Secondary engine and system parameters can be called up on Eicas or Ecam by the crew. Pictures of system layout, "synoptics", and automatic display in the event of failure were first asso ciated with Ecam. Acceptable colours were quickly defined for the brightness range and distinguish- ability required, including the now familiar "cyan" blue and "magenta" purple. But the purpose for which they are used are still not consistent, although white is commonly used for data, and green, amber, and red are used for operating value ranges. A broad consensus is emerging on some principles. Associated data has the same colour on different displays in the same cockpit. Active or armed functions are distinguished by location, colour, or boxing. Flashing is used to gain attention. Autoflight mode indications seem to have standardised at the top of the PFD. Vertical profile display on the PFD and ND is likely to develop in the future, and scales will probably have grey backgrounds to improve legibility. But the most signifi cant current trend is the adoption of side-by- side layouts for these two displays, together with a larger screen. The A320 has 7 • 25in2 screens which were judged to be the optimum for the size of cockpit. The first aircraft to have 8in displays was the Gulfstream IV, with a side-by-side layout. A similarly sized and disposed Efis is planned for the 747-400 and MD-11 airliners. Automatic system switching and recon figuration is becoming a common philos ophy, but Airbus and the two major US manufacturers still adhere to their separate views on display automation. System synop tic is immediately displayed upon failure in the European system, but the crew is reminded to call up a display when convenient on the US screen.
