;M.;« Left to right: NH 90, Airbus A340, JF-90/EFA, DFS-Kopernikus, MTFF (COLUMBUS), SANGER, ARIANE 5 with HERMES, PAH-2, Nothing Is More Realistic Than Strong Visions. In 1891 Otto Lilienthal made his first glider flights of up to 300 meters. But most of his con temporaries could only laugh at his "ridiculous attempts to fly." A few decades later, a 25-year-old American mailplane pilot climbed into his single-wing Ryan in May of 1927, taking off to stun the world with the first solo, non-stop flight from New York to Paris. Charles Lindbergh landed in Paris a gruelling 33 hours and 5,800 kilo meters later. His record-breaking flight was and is a sensation that is only comparable with the first manned moon landing 42 years later. Both extraordinary feats began with a vision. Visions which became reality by intelligence and determination. Likewise, people could only shake their head at the first talk of a possible European cooperation in Aerospace. Visions like this did not fit into the times. And, still later, hardly anyone believed the possibility of an airplane being built by four countries, and that it could ever go on to worldwide success. Visions can only grow with long- term thought. Thought that goes beyond one's own lifetime, and certainly beyond the active span of a career.
