• Ecureuil at sea Aerospatiale is to produce a new naval version of its Ecureuil light helicopter. The aircraft, designated AS.355M2, is designed for maritime sur veillance, but can perform target designation and has an integrated magnetic anomaly detector for anti-submarine warfare. It can carry one or two torpedoes. • TWA privatised TWA chairman Carl Icahn says that the airline's privatisation is complete. Icahn, who pre viously owned 77 per cent of the shares, now owns 90 per cent. He transferred the remainder to the unions who have criticised the deal. At least one lawsuit is due to reach trial. • Scout-Stol runs Skytrader of Kansas says that ground runs of the Turbomeca Astazou XVI engines in its Scout-Stol utility aircraft were "flawless". The Astazou- powered Scout-Stol is due to fly about now. • MPs examine RO sale The Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee is to re open its inquiry into the sale of Equipped with an undernose radar, the naval Aerospatiale Ecureuil can be used for over-the-horizon targeting state-owned armament manu facturer Royal Ordnance to British Aerospace. The new investigation centres on MPs' concern that the Ministry of Defence undervalued the devel opment potential of RO's land assets. • TV satellite launched France's first television broad cast satellite, TDF 1, has been put in orbit from an Ariane rocket launched from Kourou, French Guiana. Built by the French-German-Belgian Euro- satellite consortium, TDF is owned by France Telecom, which is seeking customers in addition to French TV. Its German sister satellite, TV-Sat, was lost earlier when a solar array panel failed to deploy, but TV-Sat 2 and TDF 2 are also to be launched. • Heathrow drugs case British customs have asked a High Court judge to rule on preliminary legal questions in the case of the Air Canada TriStar impounded at Heath row after 331kg of cannabis was found in the cargo hold. In a full trial, to be held possibly before the end of 1988, Air Canada will challenge the £ 50,000 fine it had to pay to recover the aircraft. • Malta freight service Air Malta is introducing a weekly BAe 146-200QT freighter service between the island and London. The over night weekend service uses a TNT-owned'l46 carrying 10-5 tonnes of cargo. • Lear jet 31 damaged A Learjet 31 on a European demonstration tour was dama ged in a heavy landing at Les Eplatures near Zurich. There were no injuries, but a replace ment aircraft had to be flown from USA to continue the tour. Learjet says that a prospective customer was flying the aircraft from the left-hand seat at the time of the accident. • Mogadishu update Somalia's Civil Aviation Authority is enlarging and modernising Mogadishu Air port. It has awarded a $12-3 million turnkey contract to Selenia for primary and second ary radars, a data-display system, and radio navigation aids. A new control tower and terminals are being built.
