Piston twins The range of piston twins in production has further dwindled, and now comprises just a handful of types. Out goes the Canadair CL-215, which in future will be offered only with turbine power, and the Piper Chieftain. Last year saw the departure of the Beech Baron, and the previous year witnessed the deletion of four Cessna types. The remaining aircraft offer cruise speeds in the 137kt-195kt bracket and ranges of a little over 600 n.m. to more than 1,100 n.m. The Piper Seneca III is considerably less expensive than the others at under $250,000 (less than it cost last year). It may one day be rivalled by a Polish-made Seneca, which is expected to be sold in the West shortly. However, the US aircraft lacks the short-field performance and seating capacity of the Pilatus Britten-Norman BN-2B variants, or the Partenavia P.68 series. The Partenavia P.68C/TC offers the fastest cruise.
