• German heads Airbus board Industry ministers from the four Airbus countries, meeting in London last week, fulfilled industry expectations by naming a West German, Dr Hans Friderichs, as chairman of the restructured,Airbus super visory board. Dr Friderichs, formerly a West German Economics Minister, replaces the late Dr Franz Josef Strauss. Details of the restructure needed to make Airbus Indus trie an efficient commercial venture will not be announced until after another Ministers meeting in Toulouse in Decem ber. A Frenchman is expected to be named managing director, and Britain hopes to secure the post of finance director. • Rutan and Beech split Burt Rutan has reacquired the Scaled Composites company which he sold to Beech in 1985. Under Beech ownership the company designed and flew two proof-of-concept aircraft—the five-seat Model 81 piston single and a cabin-class twin capable of being powered by piston, turboprop, or turbofan engines. The sale marks the end of Beech's interest in both projects. The Frazer-Nash common rail launcher, designed to carry the AIM-120 Amraam on the updated Sea Harrier FRS.2, has successfully fired an AIM-9 Sidewinder from a Sea Harrier FRS.I • USAF A-12 studied General Dynamics has received a $7-9 million, 11-month contract to study a United States Air Force version of the A-12 Advanced Tactical Aircraft it is developing with McDonnell Douglas for the US Navy. Under a Congressionally spon sored Department of Defence memorandum of under standing, the A-12 would carry out the long-range attack role of the USAF's F-111, while a version of the latter's Advanced Tactical Fighter would replace the Navy's F-14 interceptor. • RAF heads defence staff Air Chief Marshal Sir David Craig has been promoted Marshal of the Royal Air Force, and will succeed Admiral of the Fleet Sir John Fieldhouse on December 9 as Chief of the Defence Staff. Air Chief Marshal Sir Peter Harding has been appointed Air Aide-de- Camp to Her Majesty The Queen, and will succeed Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir David Craig as Chief of the Air Staff. This appointment also carries membership of the Defence Council and of the Air Force Board of the Defence Council. • Massport plan opposed Boston Logan Airport's contro versial landing fee structure, which discriminates against smaller aircraft, violates both Federal law and the US Consti tution, a Department of Trans portation judge has found. If Judge Burton Kilko's finding is upheld by DoT Deputy Secre tary Mimi Dawson, Massport will have seven days to conform before Federal funding is removed. Massport has twice raised landing fees since introducing its new structure on July 1.
