NEWS IN BRIEF • Venezuela buys AS.322Mls Venezuela has ordered eight Aerospatiale AS.322M1 Super Puma tactical transport helicop ters for its Army and Air Force. The 9-tonne twin-engined heli copter is primarily intended for the transport of up to 25 fully equipped commandos. The Ml version has uprated Turbomeca Makila 1A1 engines and an increased gross weight. • Hughes delivers Mavericks Hughes Aircraft has delivered the first production AGM-65F and G versions of the Maverick air-to-surface missile. The US Navy's F version is optimised for attacks on ships while the Air Force's G variant is for use against a variety of targets. Both use imaging infrared guid ance. Hughes has orders for 545 F models and 1,297 G models. Federal Aviation Administration certification of the Bell 222 helicopter re- engined by Heli-Air with Allison 250-C30s in place of Lycoming LTSlOh is expected within three months • Last Cruise leaves Belgium The last ground-launched cruise missiles have been with drawn from Belgium by the US Air Force. On December 13, in front of a group from the Soviet Press, the last batch of eight missiles left Florennes airbase in southern Belgium aboard a Lockheed C-141 Starlifter bound for Davis Monthan, in Arizona. A total of 20 missiles had been deploved in Belgium since March 1985 by the US Air Force's 485th Tactical Missile Wing. • Turkey takes S-70As The Republic of Turkey's Jandarma (national police) has taken delivery of three Sikorsky S-70A-17 helicopters, and ex pects another three to be deliv ered this month to complete a $40 million order placed with Sikorsky early last year. In addi tion to the Jandarma helicop ters, the Turkish Government wants to obtain as many as 720 helicopters over the next ten years to replace its ageing military fleet. Sikorksy hopes that the Jandarma order will give it a foothold in this major market. • ANA helps Taiwan airline All Nippon Airways has agreed in principle to help Taiwanese shipping magnate Y. F. Chang to launch his new airline. Chang, owner of Evergreen Marine investing 20-strong alongside Corporation, is 1 billion to operate a Boeing /Airbus fleet Taiwanese flag- carrier China Airlines.
