Final Intelsat V poised The final Intelsat V commu nications satellite is to be launched by Ariane V28 on January 26. Intelsat V-F15, built by prime contractor Ford Aerospace, will be placed into geostationary orbit at 60° East, replacing Intelsat V-F12, which will be moved to 359° West to replace the V-F2 satellite, which has reached the end of its operational life. Intelsat's present operational system consists entirely of V-series satellites. Six of these are over the Atlantic Ocean, three over the Pacific, and four over the Indian Ocean. Intelsat Vs have a transmission capacity of 15,000 simultaneous tele phone circuits and two tele vision channels. The first of the new Intelsat VI communications satellites will be launched by Ariane V35 later this year. Arianespace plans to conduct nine launches of 13 satellites this year, and its definitive manifest will be published in early March. To maintain this launch schedule, Arianespace "must remain more vigilant and rigorous than ever with regards to launch safety and produc tivity," says company chairman Frederic d'Allest. Since the successful "reflight" of Ariane V19 in September 1987, 15 satellites have been launched on nine flights in 15 months. The launch record for 1988 was seven launches and 12 satellites. Arianespace has contracts to launch a further 19 satellites. The launch of V29 is tenta tively scheduled for February 28. This Ariane 4 launch will carry Japan's JC-Sat 1 and the first Meteosat Operational Programme satellite, MOP 1.
