WORLD'S AIR FORCES 1989 1989/early 1990, and three more in 1992. These will supplement the current fleet of ten helicopters and two fixed-wing transports. Nominally part of the Air Force but operated under naval control are four Atlantic 1 maritime patrol aircraft, which are to be superseded by P-3C Orions in the early 1990s. An option on an additional six T-35D Pillan trainers was converted into a firm order in December 1988. Other FAP roles include policing the sea approach es to the Panama Canal, transport and liaison. Four GAF Nomad Mission Masters are used for coastal surveillance, and are fitted with search radars. Five ex-RAAF C-47 Dakotas and three IAI- 201 Aravas fly transport missions, the latter also being employed on patrols along the Indonesian border. An air-cabability study into the short- and longer-term needs of the PNGDF was carried out in 1985/86 with Australian assistance, considering both fixed-and rotary-wing requirements. As a result, the Australian Government is providing four surplus UH-1H Iroquois helicopters to meet immediate PNGDF needs. A new transport aircraft is also required with the Shorts Sherpa and CN- 235M shortlisted. Paraguay Fuerza Aerea Pasraguaya The single combat squadron, the Grupo Aerotactico, operates EMB- 326GB Xavantes (Aermacchi MB.326s). Armed AT-6G Texans remain in service in the COIN role. Six Embraer Tucanos were ordered in July 1987, delivery taking place in the following December. Many transports, not all of which are airworthy, are jointly operated with TAM, Paraguay's military airline. Aviacion de la Armada Nacional Paraguay Al though it is a land-locked country, Paraguay has a navy which it uses to patrol the Paraguay River. An aviation component flies river patrol and liaison missions, the helicopters operating from platforms on river patrol vessels. The country appears determined to maintain superiority over the air forces of neigh bouring Bolivia, Chile and Ecuador. In 1976 Peru became the first South American country to order Soviet equipment, buying Su-22 Fitters, An-26 Curls, Mi-6 Hooks and Mi-8 Hips. Despite service ability problems with the Su-22s, which apparently require high maintenance man-hours per flying hour compared with Western types, Peru pur chased a second batch in 1980. The An-26 fleet was replaced with An-32s in 1987, and 18 Mi-17 Hip transport helicopters were ordered in mid-1989. Having originally ordered 26 Mirage 2000s in December 1982, with an option on another ten, Peru's recurring financial problems caused the order to be changed repeatedly, with ten single- seaters and two trainers finally being agreed upon. Pilots began training in France in 1985. Also a victim of the country's poor economy was the plan, cancelled in late 1984, to build 66 MB.339s under licence in Peru as a follow-on to the 16 aircraft bought driectly from Italy in 1981. Twenty EMB- 312 Tucano trainers were purchased from Brazil in 1987 to replace T-37s. The Mirage Vs of Grupo 13 at Chiclayo have been updated with INS, HUDs, and advanced fire-control systems, while ten more were transferred to Argentina in later 1982. Servicio Aeronaval de la Marina Peruana Fixed- wing maritime patrol duties are now flown only by S-2 Trackers since the loss of the single F.27 Maritime in December 1987. A second F.27 Mari time had already crashed in June 1986. Two Hercules transports were acquired from USAF surplus stocks in September 1988. The Navy also has a shipboard ASW capability provided by a fleet of AB-212ASWs with Sea Killer missiles for use from frigates, plus Agusta SH-3 Sea Kings armed with AM.39 Exocets for shipping attacks. Aviacion del Ejercito Peruano The Peruvian Army air arm is principally a transport force, with Mi-8s as its mainstay. The Air Force selection of the Mi- 17 will almost certainly lead to the type's adoption by the Army. The Army's commitment to opera tions in jungle and mouintain regions, where helicopters are ideal, explains the comparatively small number of fixed-wing aircraft in service.
