WORLDS AIR FORCES 1989 Uruguay Fuerza Aerea Uruguaya The FAU received two additional A-37Bs in January 1988, to replace aircraft lost in accidents, but mid-1989 reports of another seven awaiting delivery in the USA cannot be confirmed. The FAU has two flying commands, Tactical and Training. The former has two Brigada Aereas. BA-1 at Carrasco has four groups: GA-3 with CASA C.212 Aviocars, plus C-47 Dakotas and Queenairs; GA-4 with FH-227s and F.27s; GA-5 with Iroquois and Bell 212s; and GA-6 with EMB- 110 Bandeirantes. BA-2 at Durazno has two groups: GA-1 with Pucaras and T-6 Texans, and GA-2 with A-37Bs and T-33As. Training Com mand operates T-41s and T-34As. Aviacion Naval Uruguaya All Navy aircraft are operated from Base Aeronaval Capitan; Curbelo, at Laguna la Sauce, including S-2 Trackers in the ASW and SAR roles, a single maritime-patrol- configured Super King 200, and a Bell 222 for SAR duties. Pilots are trained on T-28 Trojans, T-34A/B Mentors, T-34C Turbo-Mentors and a Bell 47G helicopter. An aviation element is equipped with a CASA C.212 Aviocar, an Alouette III and two BK.117As. Tasks include liaison and VIP transport. Venezuela Fuerza Aerea Venezolanas Venezuela signed a contract with Dassault in March 1988 to cover the supply of seven Mirage 50s plus the modernisation of the FAVs surviving Mirage III/5 fleet to Mirage 50 Standard. The latter will take place in 1990/1, after the Mirage 50s have been delivered. The FAV is the only air arm in South America to operate the F-16, having received 24 between 1983 and 1985, to supplement its front-line Mirage Ills, Mirage Vs, CF-5s; and Canberras. Negotiations with the Neth erlands for the supply of seven NF-5A/Bs contin ued in mid-1989. The Tucanos ordered in 1986 to replace ageing T-34A Mentors are now in service. Two additional Tucanos have been purchased to replace aircraft lost in 1987. The FAV is organised into three commands, Combat, Training and Transport, these being sub divided into groups according to role, each group tending to operate similar types of aircraft. Aviacion de la Marina Venezolana The naval air arm is tasked with shipborne and shorebased ASW, the latter being allocated to Esc AS-Ol's S-2 Trackers at Puerto Callebo, while Esc AS-03 uses AB-212ASWs, which are also based at Puerto Callebo when not embarked on the Sucre-class frigates. Transport aircraft, including the DHC-7 Dash 7 which has a secondary maritime patrol role, are operated from Caracas (BA Gem Fransisco de Miranda) by Esc TR-02, while a fourth unit flies maritime and SAR patrols with specially config ured CASA C.212 Aviocars. Ejercito Venezolana A transport and liaison force, the Venezuelan Army has a substantial fleet of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, ranging from Arava transports to JetRanger liaison helicopters. Two G-222s were transferred to the Air Force in early 1989, while eight Super Pumas have been delivered against a December 1988 contract. The paramilitary Guardia Nacional has an air division undertaking transport and liaison duties. Although it has withdrawn from Cambodia, Vietnam continues to back com munist guerrillas fighting the Governemnt of Thailand. The VPAAF has mostly Soviet Aircraft, plus a handful of US aircraft left over from the conquered South Vietnamese Air Force. Advisers from the USSR, North Korea, East Germany and Czechoslo vakia proliferate. Modernisation of the VPAAF is under way, with more than 30 MiG-23 Floggers replacing the MiG-19 in the intercepter role and the Su-22 replacing the MiG-17 on ground-attack duties. Mi-24 Hind gunships are also in service with the VPAAF. The former US bases at Cam Ranh Bay and Da Nang are now used by detachments of Soviet Navy and Air Force units equipped with Tu-95 Bears, 11-38 Mays and, occasionally, Tu-26 Backfires. Many of the ex-SVAF F-5A/Es are held in reserve, but some, together with US transports and A-37B Dragonflies, are in regular use.
